Thinking about setting up a home wireless network

My cable modem is located in my sub-basement, where it connects to a Linksys router. I'd like to add internet/network connectivity to computers on the upper floors of this house without rewiring anything. My question is what kind of range/signal strength should I expect, and whether I'll absolutely need a signal booster. I realize this is dependent on walls, etc, so further information follows....

Sub-basement: cable modem
Basement: located 4 steps above sub-basement
First floor: located 8 steps above basement
Second floor: located 6 steps above first floor

The distance between the cable modem and where I want to extend the connection is roughly 100ft, through 2 hardwood floors, and a bedroom door. The plan is to use 802.11g, most likely a Linksys WRP54G.

I have a 802.11b linksys router in my basement. I was able to getting 3 bars out of 4 for signal strength upstairs. This worked fine and now with a signal booster I get 4 bars. I can stream audio to my back porch to my pocket pc which is cool too.

I have a Dlink DI-524 wireless g router that is in my basement. My son's computer is located 2 full floors above this, in the opposite corner of my house (normal colonial structure). I get great reception on his computer, no problem at all.

I think your best bet is to try the router out, and if the signal isn't strong enough look at adding another wireless router or WAP in between hte floors. I have a feeling you won't need this.
