Thinking about sending a first Gen Xbox360 to MS for repair

I was curious if anyone has had any experience with MS's repair program. I talked to someone on the phone who told me that MS would either repair it, give me a refurb of unknown generation of the non-slim style, or give me a slim (refurb?) in replacement. Can anyone give me an more detailed information about this process? I'm just not sure it is worth $100 to get back a repaired Xbox360 without HDMI even...

The new slim Xbox 360 is pretty damn nice. Both the fan and the DVD drive are so much quieter. It has built-in wifi, a smaller PSU, and it has a special port on the back for Kinect that functions both as the USB and power for it.

I had a launch-day 360 die on me a few months ago, and I'm glad I picked up a slim. Can't say I've dealt with MS support, though.

You could sell your broken one for parts and get a few dollars towards a new slim with 1-year warranty, wifi, HDMI.

My 360 is still humming along so I haven't had to deal with support.

I don't think it's worth it. You said it's $100? So you'll have a refurbished unit with (I'm guessing) a 3 month warranty. Additionally, it's more prone to failure than recent revisions.

Alternatively, you can buy the 4GB slim from Amazon for $200 and receive a $50 promotional Amazon credit.

This gets you a brand new slim with all the associated improvements (and a new 1 year warranty) effectively for $150. Sell your broken 360 for whatever you can get. Even if you can't sell it, getting the new slim only costs $50 than refurbing what you have.

Are all the benefits that come with the slim worth $50 to you?

my first gen went in 5 times..

every time they sent back the same gen refurbed.
at least for me my repair center was here in Texas so very fast turn around.
never had to pay a cent though..

Have you had experience first hand with support on repair?

yes i've had 3 360's RRoD on me that I've sent in (under warranty), and I've fixed my own about 2-3 times, and fixed a bunch with the x-clamp fix, and it always comes back.

personally i think the extra $100 is worth to get a more reliable system with HDMI on it.

As the others said, dump it, save your money, and buy the Slim. The first generation 360s are likely to all fail eventually. Might as well get one with better hardware that runs cooler and quieter.

I've sent one back for repair before. I believe it was within 3 years but it was completely free to fix. You are saying literally first gen? Why are they charging you $100 even. I thought MS literally came out a few yrs and admit they goofed and offered to fix any and all? And I don't know where you live, but you have two or three additional choices. You can literally pay someone on Craigslist about $25 to fix an RROD issue these days while you wait. Replace a drive - about $35. So those are 1/4 the price you'd be paying. You could sell it as is outright on CL for $25 no questions asked - at least in this area. So then take that money, turn around and buy someone's 2nd gen Elite for $100 and you just paid $75 for an Elite. Or as someone said, buy a new Slim because they are so cheap now.

Yes, this is the first gen unit made in 2006, says it right on the back. I guess I'll be looking at deals for a slim instead of messing with this thing. If it was 100 bucks to upgrade to a slim, then I would be all over it. But if you only get back a same gen unit from repair, there is no way that is worth it. Thanks for all the input!

Any tips for getting rid of broken Xboxes? I have two with video problems (one has composite only, the other has no video) that are taking up space.
