anyone able to point me in a good direction to find a guide? google is being less than helpful :(

I've got the original Kindle Fire, and I've been thinking about trying to root it if only to get the Google market store on there instead of being confined to Amazon's store apps (which seems to have a smaller selection and not updated/patched as frequently as the android market)

I don't own a Kindle Fire so can't speak from experience, but according to the second link,

The downside of rooting the Kindle Fire is that you won’t be able to stream videos from Amazon Instant Video if your device is rooted. The good news is that unrooting the tablet is at least as easy as rooting it — and once you’ve installed the Android Market it will continue to work even if you remove root access.

Don't know whether that is true as of now, but I would proceed with caution if you are currently taking advantage of Amazon Prime service. And make sure to use USB 2.0 port instead of USB 3.0 to avoid unexpected complication.
