Thinking about putting up a glftpd-based server

First off, the server will be primarily for private usage - I intend to set up accounts for friends and family to use it to dump/store documents, pictures, etc on. I was also considering making a public account and keeping different OSS/freeware stuff on there (stuff like different flavors of linux, firefox, OpenOffice, etc).

Anyway, I'm doing this now, but I'm running G6/BPFTP server daemon on Windows 2000. I was able to get some stuff setup (CRC/SFV/MD5 checking) this way without really understanding what I was doing... I just found a script with instructions on how to get it done, and followed them.

I'd like the same functionality under linux, but for one I'd like to understand how it works a little better. From what I've read and what friends/contacts have told me, glftpd is the way to go. I've read through a lot of the documentation and have made a little progress setting up a test server on a Slackware box I had sitting around, but I'm pretty far from getting the functionality I want.

Does anyone out there run this? I'll probably be working with and tweaking this thing for a while off and on once I initially get it going, so I'm hoping to find someone I can bounce questions off of from time to time. In the meantime, I'm doing my best with the documentation, but since I'm not a linux guru by any means, I'm hitting some snags.

Okay, well, then... I guess I should direct any questions to you, huh? ;)

Have you checked out WebDAV? It's pretty darn awesome for mixed clients and grannies.

You should really post *what* snags you are happening if you want help.

Well, before I got too detailed with the snags, I thought I'd actually see if this is the best place to go for help, since there are lots of other forums I could go to as well... I just prefer the people on this board, so...

I'll post more details when I get a chance I suppose, but I really only get the time to work on this about a couple hours a week, and I try not to bug people too much before trying to figure it out on my own, since I learn more that way.

Right now, I know the service is up and running, but I can't seem to connect to it from another PC on the lan... I haven't even gotten to the point where I want to make it available outside the network yet.
