I am on a really tight budget, and if my car did not break down I would not even consider buying a new car right now. But my sh1tbox is finally dead; and I do not want to spend anymore money fixing it. The mazda portege 5 is one car that I am really interested in right now. What do you guys thing? What should I expect to pay for this car? Im thinking of buying a car in the next month or two. Right now I can still drive my mom's Camry, but when my bro gets his license I will have to buy my own car. Any other cars around this price range with good financing options available?

I would at least look at the Subaru TS wagon. Bigger engine, AWD, and ABS standard, and just a smidgen more than the mazda. Resale is better too.

Also, check out a VW golf. Excellent standard options, and reasonably priced.

yeah, i was interested the subaru. im actually a big fan of subaru, but not only does the ts wagon cost more (a little over $17000), but they don't have very good financing options. i need the financing to be really good. one mazda dealer here advertised no payment first year and 0% interest for the next 3. thats pretty good in my opinion.

one more question. if i do purchase...should i opt for a sound system, or do a custom one.

Edmunds.com puts the P5's TMV right around $16,000.

Go here to get more detailed pricing. Also, Mazda brought back their 0% financing incentives, sooo if you have good credit... There are 100 votes at Edmunds with an average vote of 9.2. People apparently love this car. :) You get my recommendation.

vi_edit,
you and i think alike. the golf and the subaru were the first two cars that came to mind. but like i said, i dont like their financing options. and also, the vw dealerships around where i live SUCK! my mom and dad were so frustrated when they tried to buy their first vw bug.

If I looked correctly, you can do zero percent financing through Mazda for 60 months on the MP5. I'm not really fond of those "no payments for a year" deals on cars. They just depreciate too damn much to be that far upside down for that long.

A quality custom sound system will sound leaps and bounds better than anything OEM - but it may cost more. Please, please go to a audio specialty store. Don't buy from Best Buy or Circuit City.

Is it just me or do MP5's seem lower to the ground than most cars? I was walking back from school one day and I saw a very nice dark blue MP5. It just seemed low to the ground. I thought it might have been lowered, but it was being driven by a 30 something year old woman.................

Anyways it looks like a nice car. Never been in one tho.

Madza has/had 0% for 5 years on the Protege sedan, but I thought the MP5 was excluded. That may have changed recently. If you can finance almost the whole amount, 0% for 5 years is a great deal. An $18000 car is only $300 a month.

I like the MP5 a lot. I simply wish it were a little bit bigger and had a 2.2-2.4L class I-4 instead of the wimpy 130hp 2.0L.

if your budget is 16K before tax, forget all these toy cars, hurry and buy an accord. My parents just got a 4 cylinder, 4 dr LX for 16.6K before tax, 4.9% interest. It's a much, much nicer and more substantial car than the class you're looking at and the price difference is really small.

You have to hurry tho, existing stock is all that's left and when they're gone, they're gone.

im not much of an accord fan myself. i liked their older models, but i don't really like their new ones. and 4.9% financing is not that great, but the price is not bad.
