Thinking about making an international move

London is a place that I have always hoped one day to live, maybe do my graduate school, or Doctorate study there.

Lately I have felt like just dropping everything, selling all my belongings and making the move. I know this is a result of things that have happened lately, girl trouble, trouble with family, I don't feel right where I live anymore.

I probably shouldn't be making the move for a few reasons...

1. I don't know anyone/anything in or about London
2. I'm a sophomore in college second term, about to apply to a university after doing all of my prerequisites.
3. Financially it just wouldn't be a good idea.
4. I sort of feel like I am just running from my problems
5.Throwing all of my schooling away because I am sure none of it will transfer, leaving all of my family behind.

But after all of this I still can't help but feel like going would solve a lot of things, and I still really want to go even after all of these reasons.

I need the folks of ATOT to give their opinions. 🙂

Maybe try studying abroad for a semester before moving there permanently. I know a girl who's in South Africa, who originally planned to stay for a semester, but ended up enjoying it so much that she transferred to the university there and has been there for the last two years.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Moving somewhere else is IMO a great idea, experience the world, but you might want to think about it a little more before you do anything 😛
Find out more about where you might want to go, whether there are other, possibly better, alternative, and how expensive it might be.
London is going to be incredibly expensive, it also has the highest unemployment rate in the UK. Although they do speak English (or claim to).

Anyone know of any good sites that I can look up info on moving and what I need to do? Apartments, School..etc.?

what about all my reasons? 😛

They seem like thoughts that anyone would have regarding a major decision like this. If it's something you think this is something you still want to do after considering all of your reasons why it wouldn't be a good idea-- go do it. Live while you're young. 🙂

Yeah, I'd go with this route. Try to find some type of study abroad program.

Personally, I think travel is great for expanding one's horizons. It's also something I think we as Americans do way too little of. We need our young people to have more of a world view.

Do it. You're young and at least later you can say you did something that a lot of other people wouldn't have.

Have a backup plan but try it out for a little bit and if you don't like it then you have your backup. You'll kick yourself later in life for not doing it when you had the chance.

LOL 🙂 why do you want to come here then? Where are you from?

Well I take that back, I have a cousin that lives there. I have always heard good things and love what I see of the place through books and people telling me who did study abroad. I can't really explain it I have always just wanted to go there.

I studied abroad in Denmark, loved it so much that I got a job there after graduation and was there for 19months. I'd still be there if my visa had worked out. I still want to go back but at the rate things are going it's going to be a while.

Do it. Maybe start with a study abroad semester to see if you like it/can handle it. It's exciting but kind of tough the first few weeks.

London is nutz expensive. Perhaps somewhere else nearby first? How about finish your degree here first? Or apply now to a university there, get enrolled, then move? You need money. And usually to get that you need a degree from somewhere.

Otherwise, I can't add much. It's been my dream to do the same and move to Berlin...albeit under better circumstances. So I understand how you feel. Other then being a voice of reason, I can't say that your dream is a bad one.

On the one hand, you are making a decision during a period of emotional upheaval in your life. This can often be a bad thing, as you really aren't thinking as rationally as you should be. Proceed with caution and examine this move from all angles - including angles that you want to gloss over just because you want to move.

On the other hand, you are young and at a perfect time of life to take risks and be adventurous. If you decide that making this move is worth the risk of damaging other areas of your life (family, education, etc.), then I say go for it. Far too few people chase their dreams. One day you may look back and decide this was among the best decisions you ever made.

In the end, the decision is yours to make. Only you know your situation and how this move could impact you. If you are religious (or even if you are not), I would encourage you to pray about the matter. God gives clarity to those who seek him (even if the answer doesn't come immediately).

Very good advice!

I'm kinda curious about doing the same thing you are. Maybe come grad school, I will think about heading on over to Europe.
