So yeah.
I am finding school here boring. It is also very hard for me to find a job with me EMT certification. So I was thinking, "I got a spare 7 years, I could use some free education and a job, why not the navy?"

You see, I got one of those letters saying "Join now!" and what not, and it got me thinking.

I would get a free education, a pension, good job experience, hopefully the ability to get a job one I am out, work in exotic locations, three meals a day, meet good people...

Well some of those may not work out, but the most of them would.

Shouldnt be bad.

I salute you. Be aware, though, that as a Navy corpman you can be assigned to a Marine strikeforce. You will eat, sleep and sh!t as a Marine.

The upside is that the Marines in your unit will take excellent care of you.

Don't drop the soap :)

But seriously, you're doing a good thing for your country. My brother in law just enlisted in the Navy a few weeks back. He ships out in May, he's very excited about it

Don't do it.

You would be throwing your life away in a stupid way.

Join the Army.

:p

Are you in college right now?

I could never spend 7 years like that... I would feel like I "wasted" a significant portion of my life. That's just me though

Semper Fidelis - always faithful in Latin. It is the Marine Corps motto. Something like that.

Your life is never "wasted" when serving your country.

Sure, but it's the prime of your life, your 20s. It's when you start off your real life, build & start your career, etc. I'd feel that I would be so far behind my peers career-wise at my same age... 7 years is a long time!

Yeah cause navy guys never party or chase ladies ;)

I had 2 1/2 years in the navy (discharged due to a bad knee)

I would go back in a split second if I could. I have never had a job that was as exciting or fufilling as I did in the service.

There's jobs out there that bump former servicemen/women to the top of the list(s). There are some pretty significant advantages to joining the armed services.

I'm in noway biased because my brother graduates from OSU and receives his commission in the Spring. :)

While somewhat noble seeming, I'm not sure that I agree. You are certainly doing something good, but I think you can usually get further in life quicker without it. A very good thing to do, but not as likely to put you ahead?

Ahead = ???

If you are talking stricktly in a monatary sense, perhaps you are correct. But I think that my time in the service will garner me a great life experience that I would gladly take in exchange for a few years fighting it up the corporate ladder.

Plus, I can look back and say "damn... I did something worthwhile in my life" no matter if I sit on my ass after I get out till the day I die. That is worth something at least.

Indeed, I do mean ahead measured monetarily. I won't dispute thats its worth while or anything. Personally though I think working is one of those necessary evils in life and I want to get past that "stage" as quickly as possible. When you're young you're too poor to do anything. Between young and old you spend your life working. Then after you've (hopefully) accumulated some money, you're too old to do anything. I want to retire early and live life, see the world, etc on my own terms while I'm still reasonably young. While I wouldn't say its a wasted life, the military could definately be wasted time depending on your goals. So while thats ahead for me it might not be for everybody.

The military can be a career.

You could also be like my cousin making $17/hr in the reserves. The military can teach you lots of skills, and it looks great on your resume.

Plus it's a bonus in and of itself.

I'm not disputing that the military can be a fantastic and great career, but I also don't think that I could spend 7 years in the military. It can help you out a lot, but I think depending on what kind of job or industry you want to get into, 7 years in the military might be too much.

I am not going to sugar coat it and say that it is all fun and games BUT I did enjoy the work. I was a shop supervisotr and was GOOD at my job, so I had alot of leway. I enjoyed I would guess 90% of my time in. A school was a major party. and yes I would go back in a split secind. I got out because I could not run. I had to choose between getting out for failing the Physical Readiness Test or Get out with disability. The NAvy would not fix my knee.

I could almost feel sorry for you.

Even on my worst day, I never felt I have wasted any part of my life in the service. 9 years and counting.

Anyway, let me put my vote in for the Air Force. Navy was a close second, but I wanted to fly. Flew for 6 years on an E-3 and now I am a ground comm geek. I love it.

The Navy does have a neat slogan. If someone wrote a book about your life, would anyone want to read it? Not only do I have 2 bachelors degrees, but I have 8 years solid experience in IT. No waiting tables while craming for mid terms. I was sitting in a NOC cramming for mid terms.

All this time we got the fable of Sleeping Beauty all wrong.

The prince didn't kiss her to wake her up. No one who's slept for a hundred years is likely to wake up.

It was the other way around. He kisses her to wake himself up from the nightmare that has brought him there.

Been playing Max Payne 2, eh? :)
