Thinking about joining the Air Force....

I have been the Air Force for going 25 years now. I retire in about one year. I don't know if the AF would good for you but it has been good for me. I am a computer repairman and now they have me setting up networks and configuring email accounts among other things. My present job has been the best in my career. I think I am finally ready for retirement (25 years is a long time). Don't worry about basic, as everyone said it is just a mind game (and this is coming from an ex Military Training Instructor). I have never regretted my decision to join and I have seen most of the US, some of Europe and Asia. Heck, I have been to Rome four times.

Good luck to you if you join the service. You'll learn more than you might think. Talk to the recruiter but take time and think about what you want. Don't just jump at anything. Take your time and make a good choice for you and your future.

Good luck man. My suggestion is to start drinking lots of water now so you get used to it. Also NEVER volunteer in Basic for ANYTHING.

not always true 🙂

about week three our DSG was looking someone to remake some forms for him for some reason. I got to sit down in the office at night on the computer attempting to recreate a few forms for him for about a week. Not sure why he needed me to do it, because the military has repositories with all of those in them. Got to check my email, and email family and stuff too. I was known as "Brain" by him the rest of my cycle.

If there's anything other than the above being asked for don't volunteer. If you can get out of there without your DSG knowing your name you will be better off than if you are a Platoon Guide as he will come to you when your people screw up.

The Air Force treats their people very well...they had awesome looking women that we don't have and the dining facilities were like 4-star restaurants compared to where we normally eat.
Yeah they do. I work with Air Force from time to time cross-training some of my guys for CAS and it's ridiculous how different their daily routine and surroundings are from the Army...even though we share the same post.

What's your job going to be and do you know your first duty station?

Naval aviation is where the real men go.

Heh, I have a good friend here at Rice, highest student in out Nacy ROTC. He spent last summer flying F-18's out in cali, and when he graduates he'll spend the next 10 years flying same off of a carrier deck.

Lucky bastard. Nacy ROTC guy called last year (when I was senior in HS), told him I was interested if they could promise me a pilot's job, but he said I likely wouldn't make it, so I said fvck that.

It's getting impossible to get a pilot slot in the Navy. Retention is high, and they are cutting aviation assets (losing a carrier this year). Plus, they will be making the transition to UCAVs within the next decade or thereabouts, and they are making preparations for that. Read an article the other day about it.

You probably don't want to join the Air Force right now, cause they are cutting people like crazy. I'm in AFROTC at Michigan State, and some of our cadets, at the ROTC level, are being cut. You can try to get enlisted in the USAF, but you're probably better off going USN or Army. Plus, depending on your job specialty, you can get bonuses in the Army, cause they are trying to increase by 30,000 by September 2005.

I would LOVE to train to become a pilot, but even if I can't do that I'm sure there is something I can do. Do you get to pick what you want them to train you in, or how does that work?
I don't want to be a dick, but the kind of guy who switches majors three times in three years, and then decides to do something else is absolutely, 100%, unequivocally not material for piloting a plane in the air force, especially a fighter. If you can spell your name you will be admitted to the military, but the fighter pilots (or ANY pilot, for that matter) undergo much more stringent testing/profiling/performance reviews.

I suppose I should add in that you should finish your degree, even if it's in a crappy discipline, but I suppose you'll ignore that advice.

Anyway, goodluck, and take it from somebody who likes to be lazy and take the easy way out: you have to pay your dues sometime, if you expect to become anything.

Well the Air Force wouldn't take me so I've currently got a job as a waiter and I'm going back to school to finish my degree in the fall.
