Thinking about joining LA Fitness

My work provides $15.00/month back for a gym membership and I have always been a gym member somewhere through my father. (This is my first job out of college)

I'm in Milwaukee right now and there is an LA Fitness nearby that seems to have all the things I look for. I wanted to play some basketball for cardio and they have that.

I have been hearing mix things from my roommates and others about Ballys which is also around here. What are your thoughts on LA Fitness? Is this the right move?

I am planning on going over there later today to scope the place out but I thought I'd inquire for your initial thoughts. Thanks for reading.

I actually live with two UWM Students...I graduated college but sometimes feel as if I'm still in college. I guess it is a good way to save some cash in the early years post college. I went to UW Eau Claire.

I do not have any membership right now. I am pretty sure that the public can purchase memberships at UWM if that is an option, but other places are likely to be more convenient to get to.

I have an LA Fitness membership in FL. In my opinion, the gym has all the equipment that I need. My gym has 5 racquetball courts, 1 full size basketball court, 1 long, swimming pool, 1 jacuzzi, a sauna room, a free-weights section, a weight-machine section, and plenty of cardio machines. The gym also offers many classes and leagues. Currently, there is a cycling / spinning class, kickboxing, latin / salsa dancing, ab workout, boxing, etc. They also offer personal trainers. As for the fees, there was a one time membership fee of $100+ and $35/month.

The machines seem to be well kept, but then again the gym is less than 2 years old. I've see a couple out-of-order weight-machines, but they were fixed right away. Right now, there is only 1 broken thread mill that has not been fixed for the past month.

I've read a ton of gym membership horror stories online. Might be worth your time to google LA Fitness to see if anything is happening in your area...

to cancel, you need to send in a written statement TWO months in advance

LA Fitness is the WORST of the WORST. DO NOT SIGN UP FOR BODY OF CHANGE, WHATEVER YOU DO. - other than that, not the WORST gym ever, but the deals and the management are greedy as anything. More details via PM, but I'll put it to you like this: My friend had a doctor's note saying he couldn't work out, and they questioned it - it was fucked up.

Well it certainly depends on your location. If you're in a lower income neighborhood, you're more likely to have an older, dirtier, smellier one. If you're in a higher income one, it is more likely to be cleaner and newer. I was a member for 1 summer and I thought it did the job. But I wasn't impressed at all since they had older equipment.

BTW they will try to sell you into signing a 1 year contract.

As an alum you might get a better deal there.

It's not wise to assume that every college has women of the same caliber as UCSB.

weird, I actually enjoyed LA fitness though I had to cancel since I moved, but canceling was easy. I just created an online account and terminated though there. No hassles. If I moved back I'd rejoin, but maybe my experience was an isolated incident.

I was paying 25 a month when I was a member.
