It is FAR from your description of 'pain in the ass'...more like "don't bother shooting too fast of action unless you have experience and guess ahead of time where to focus".

But doesn't that make it a pain in the ass whenever you DO want to shoot fast-moving action or sports? I mean, the 2.9 FPS on the K20D doesn't really help either in this regard.

With prices rapidly falling on EOS 40D bodies, I really think that the 40D is a better overall camera. Sure, it doesn't have in-body IS, but the 40D is also weather-sealed (down to the flash hot-shoe), has a bigger/better screen, is much faster at 6.3 FPS, has better AF, faster max shutter/flash sync, better high ISO performance, not to mention more choices in glass to choose from...

of course I don't think its ideal. I don't think it is a total pain in the ass. I shot some race cars moving fast (down right by the cars...in the end I wanted to move back up because of the stink from the rubber tires) and while many were not keepers, i got a few I was slightly interested in. then again, I almost never shoot action, so it isn't a factor to me. But if someone makes a living on that, or that is all they shoot, then even I would not reccomend Pentax.
If someone is going on a trip, I would think that 'action' shots really don't arise. It is still fast enough for me to catch 'quick random moments' and I spent 1.5 months in Taiwan doing just that without a problem on a 'slow' K100D.

And like the post above me mentioned, the 40D has a certain 'level' of weather proofing, but Pentax gives you the actual weather sealing. And honestly,in body IS is the biggest reason for me to choose pentax, aside from the price. I have old Takumar glass I bought, and its great knowing that they are stabilized (And its even better knowing that once i upgrade a body, my IS gets re equipped with the latest and greatest for all my glass. of course, the downside is that i have first generation in body IS which is not as effective as later Pentax bodies).
Slower FPS I can with, more grain high ISO I can deal with (but seriously, I agree...Canon is #1 when it comes to NR algorithms). Lens selection I think is not a big issue - I agree it was much more of a problem >100mm two years back, but the selection is much better now; I don't need 9 different types of glass to cover the same focal range. 3-4 work fine (ie: DA 16-45, 16-50 DA*, 17-70 DA, 17-70 sigma, 17-50 sigma, 17-50 tamron...that is plenty for that range). And how s flash an issue? I've easily shot 1/500 with flash on...then again I have the top Pentax flash, and just switch the sucker into highspeed mode.

Ideally, I believe all DSLRs preform well and the results come out that are nice...but this FUD about Pentax being in the shitter is simply not true.
