Thief 2, System Shock 2 and Deus Ex were some of my favorite games. I heard NOFL is similar. Sounds like a no-brainer then right? But I don't know if I believe monolith could make a decent game since almost everything they've done in the past 3 years has stunk.

I loved Deus Ex(even though I could never finish it, there was this one part in Paris that ALWAYS locked my PC hard), ut NOLF didn't float my boat

I loved NOLF, great game. I would definetly recommend it. Great levels, enemy AI is great, way better than the Deus Ex AI. I had a great time playing it. The music is pretty cool too.

Let me start by saying that I rarely play games so I don't have much basis for comparison. However, I downloaded a NOLF demo and after trying it, actually went out and bought the game. Great graphics and it's a lot of fun!

I'm not so concerned with the visuals. Basically, I'll buy a game if it's 1) long enough, 2) has believable AI, 3) is different or somehow exceptional, 4) bug free. 'Course it must be fun, too. I heard trmiv say the "great AI" line so that's good. My only fear is that nofl might be too "corny".

Sephy, care to expunge on why you didn't like it????

If you're on a fast connection or incredibly patient, you should give the demo a try. I'm a cheap bastard when it comes to buying games and this is one of only two games (the other was NFS: PU) that I've bought as soon as it was released based on the demo. Usually I just wait for the prices to drop instead of wasting perfectly good hardware money. :)
I thought the demo was pretty funny and not corny at all!

NOLF is a blast. The actions can be intense or stealthy, it's all up to you. You'll get a chuckle here and there, too :)

Hey JB,

You and I have similar gaming tastes, so I think you'll like NOLF. I'm about 2/3 through and it is a lot of fun. It's not semi-non-linear like DX and not as precision stealth oriented as Thief, SS2, or DX, but it is a lot of fun. It DOES take a particular sense of humor though, so if you haven't tried the demo you may want to for that reason alone. If you don't find the humor to your liking, or at least tolerable, then you may find the game silly or annoying (I find it hilarious at times).

It took me about 2 levels to get into it, but now I really enjoy it. It's kind of "DX Lite" since it doesn't have the RPG elements. The AI is EXTREMELY good. Bad guys take cover, use interlocking fields of fire, run away if they get caught alone or hurt, etc. My only complaint is that it's the first game I've had to run at less than 1024x768 at 32 bit color/textures since I upgraded my rig (C533A@825/GTS 64MB 220/400). It runs fine and looks good at 800x600 though. I also found the interface a little inelegant, but not distractingly so

Anyway, if you like the demo and can get the full game for $29.99 or less, buy it.

Very nice game, I finished it 3 weeks ago, played it in 1600*1200 32bits full details, very nice grafx, the only thing I hate are the stealth level where you can't blow your cover (kill, kill, destroy !!!)
I recommend it.

Ouch - though NOLF is great fun, I must say that it's not nearly as good as Deus Ex or System Shock in my opinion. It's also different, less RPG-like. The story, as far as I have seen it, is not as interesting as Deux Ex' and not as frightening as System Shock's.
Just my two cents - definitively get the demo before buying anything.

Ape,

Hiya. Well if you endorse it, I must buy it. Actually, if I'm prepared for a "silly" game and expect craziness there should be no problem. Groovy, baby! Yeah! :p

If the AI is good that alone is reason to buy it. I'm coming off dissapointment with Heavy Metal FAKK 2 which has really splotchy AI. Buy.com has nofl at $36 + 5 so I might do that...it's still premiumly priced locally.

I'll prolly play it at 1280x1024x16 because my GF2 tears everything up at 16-bit...unless the 32-bit texture work is outstanding...?

JB,

It's probably right up your ally then. The texture work is nothing special, but the game did NOT look good in 16 bit color (what does?). I didn't try bumping down the textures though. There's a whole mess of special effects you can monkey around with however.

The other slight issue is that the weapon balance is a little weak, meaning mostly redundant. There's 3 or 4 pistols, 3 or so sub-machine guns/assault rifles, a couple spear guns, a couple grenade launchers, that are all pretty much interchangable within their own weapon type. Some of the special items are clever and funny, but usually not as effective as a bullet :).

GameSpot has a really nice Game Guide you can DL for free that's worth checking-out.

Enjoy.
