Thinking about getting an RX-8

I need to buy a new car, because of my credit, I need to get my parents to co sign... at first they were like, you have to get a new car so we get low interest and you have a warranty.... I talked to my stepdad, who is the decision maker, and I basically said, look, I make good money, and if I'm going to commit to a loan on a new car or something that expensive, I want to spend the money to get something I will enjoy... bla bla bla

well I told him I wanted to get an RX-8.. I have found some 2004 models, in great shape, with the balance of the factory warrany, and about 40,000 - 50,000 miles for about $18k. I really like the car, am not looking for a speedster, and I love the way they drive... ( i test drove one a few days ago)....

I know they don't have the best gas mileage (no big deal) and apparently can drink oil... but as long as I take care of the car, is there any big red flags about this vehicle that I should be aware of?

I know someone who owns one, their only complaints have been....

1: Hard on tires.
2: Burn oil.

Sharp looking car, esp. in black.

Hell, if the engine dies, swap in an LS2 and have more fun.

I say go for it- they're gorgeous cars.

I'd be a bit wary of used ones, since the type of person who buys them probably aren't all that easy on them..so definitely get a good inspection before buying.

cool... im not going to be hard on it... I just want a daily driver that looks good and will be comfortable.. I will probably buy 18's though so it has nice rims... im not a racer, as i will be getting an automatic... not going to screw with the engine... i might put in component speakers and a small sub....

3. Horrible gas mileage.
4. No low-end torque.
5. Mazda's history of Wankel rotaries indicates a high probablity of poor engine reliability.

definately... i will certianly do carfax stuff and have the car inspected.. the only thing is, I was thinking I would go as far as to buy a car out of state just to save some money... how can I go about doing that w/o getting screwed? just get one that has remaining factory warranty just in case?

im sure the gas mileage isn't all that bad, definatley not as good as a civic or something, but id pay extra to have a nice car... i dotn care about tork! i just want a smooth driving car... and engine reliability... i dont plan on having it more than 3-4 years max... I eventually want to get a BMW, actually, asap... i just cant do it now..

I drove in a Mazdaspeed RX8 prototype yesterday. Damn that car looks hot. The transmission is so freakin smooth. (same trans as an S2000)

Check the transmission if you go manual. I had an 04 and had NOTHING but issues with gear grinding.

Just read you want to go auto, good luck with that. They are slow as dirt.

And I'm sure you're wrong. The gas mileage is absolutely horrendous. Low to mid teens if the tach ever hits over 6k.

If I'm going to get 15 mpg, I'll take a 350Z that has some balls.

Can one actually fit in there? The rotery that is in one now is awfully tiny.

An automatic RX8 hahahahahahaha

Be prepared for lots of that. The manual isn't exactly quick and the auto is detuned to make even less power.

You said you want a BMW?

You can easily afford one. An E46 (body style that just got replaced) 323i isn't very expensive or even an E46 325i.

You could also look at getting an older E36 (92-98 body style) M3. They're pretty reliable, easily exceeding 150k miles.
They run anywhere from $10,000 for poor condition to $20,000 for extremely good condition/low miles (under 50k).

Not a good reason😛

I guess its not nearly as bad as the people that drive fast cars slow.

I'd rather see a fast car drive slow than to end up like this asshat.

Don't put words in my mouth.

Merging onto the freeway at 40mph in your E55 is NOT acceptable:|
QFT! :|

lol

I'd much rather have a fast car that looks slow than a slow car that looks fast. That's why I like my truck.. Nobody ever expects it to do anything. 😉

13MPG average is killing me though.

IMO, a very bad choice for a daily driver. You should be looking at safety, mileage, and comfort.
