Thinking about getting an AppleTV

I read that it needs to be connected to a computer that is on and running iTunes, is this true?

I would like to have an apple tv in the bedroom, but the mac mini that I have iTunes on is a HTPC that I use bootcamp on for TV via Snapstream Beyond TV and switch back to OSX to sync with my Ipod Touch. The mac mini is connected to a windows machine in the basement that runs the cable programming.

Could I theoretically have iTunes running on the windows machine in the basement that connects with the Apple TV since the machine in the basement is always on or cannot I not have two iTunes going on two different machines? I only sync the iPod to the mac.

You dont even need to have iTunes running, thats just if you want it to sync an iTunes library on one computer with the hard drive on the Apple TV. You can just share your library and never have it sync if you want. I use mine for renting movies and never sync it with my computer. Or youc an sync it with more then one windows or mac box. no worries.

I suggest checking out atvflash.com. With that I'd expect you could play anything on your NAS without the hassle of fiddling with iTunes and H264 format nonsense.
