My best friend died a few years ago. At the time I really wanted to get a tattoo to remember him by. I'm not one to jump into anything though, especially anything that permanent. I've still been thinking about it since then though. I don't want anything cheesy. Any ideas?

I've been thinking about a similar tattoo (cousin died) for about 6 years, haven't come up with any good ideas yet. :(

Shave your head and put a life size portrait of him on the back of your body. That way when someone looks at you from the back, it looks like him.

but seriously.. im not sure what could be recommended... what did you to with the friend? What fun activities did you share together? Without knowing anything like that, all I can think of is cheesy stuff.

It needs to be something you design.

Is this or this something like what you'd want to get?

Did he have a favorite interest or hobby you could incorporate into it?

Something like that was what I was thinking at first. Now I'm kinda leaning to something maybe a little more symbolic.

Pick something unique from your relationship. You don't even have to have lettering on it, as it's a something that was special to you guys. If this is a memorial tat, then that's all you need. It doesn't have to make sense to anyone else.

put a decal on your rear-window of your car. that is the proper way to remember someone.

i think a tattoo to 'remember' someone is a total copout. i sincerely hope that i mean more to someone than something superficial & vain.

While a tatoo is better then nothing, Is it really the best thing you could do to remember him by? Name a kid after him, (have a kid first of course :)), plant a tree, get to know his family better, get a better gravestone for him, arrange a service project in his name helping orphans or something like that. Do something that he would have personally liked you to do and then tell you kids, friends, family about it. Write a biography about him or his life. All of these things would do a better job at keeping the guy remembered.

(sorry to hear you lost someone close, it is tough and I wish you the best :brokenheart: )

Unlike many people in this thread - I think a tattoo is a great way to remember someone. I like the other recommendations that people have made in this thread. Don't worry if the tattoo doesn't make sense to anyone else, get something that reminds you of the friend (something you had in common, etc).

Get a tribal design on your lower back; that's always classy.

Be original and get a barb wire.

Nothing says "I won't forget you" like a bunch of ink stamped in your arm ;)

When you think of him, what comes to mind?

OP, you really don't have to get anything to intricate, maybe just his name in calligraphy and R.I.P. and the date he was born and died. It's simple and you'll always remember him.

Also, to everyone, why so much hate on here about tatts? I for one love tatts and I'm aiming to get another one soon. Love the look of it and the pain (Yes, I'm different)

People dislike tattoos for multiple reasons:
#1 People get them during a phase. You tend to regret it later.
#2 The body isn't meant to be a canvas. The hobby store sells those.
#3 Tattoos are so mainstream it isn't "unique" anymore. It is counterculture to NOT have a tattoo... come join us cool dudes ;)
#4 Most look pretty damn ugly.
#5 Everyone seemingly gets the same damn tattoos (especially when it comes to women).
#6 The idea that your identity can be defined in an X by Y area of ink is really self-deprecating.

We wonder why you'd mark up your body like that *shrug*. (Again, it is your body, but it looks pretty damn retarded for many of us.)

I disagree on most. Yes, people usually get tatts during a phase but why no commemorate that phase somewhat? It makes you who you are, why not remember what you've been through, good or bad? I guess it's just a matter of choice and I for one, could care less what someone on an online forum thinks. It's my body, I'll do what I please.
