Thinking about getting a Samsung 172X-Silver

I really want one of these. The price is a little steep, but I think it would be worth it. The only thing that I'm leery about is it's native res, which is a little high: 1280x1024. Seems a little high. I guess I'd have to try out the resolution in a store.

I would think that this would tax my 9800 pro while playing games, right? What's the color depth on this?

I have the 172T. Happy with the purchase. 🙂 12x10 seemed steep at first too, but you can customize font sizes in XP's display settings so that text isn't so small. You get used to it after a few days.

I don't have a 9800 Pro so I can't comment, but even with my 9600 AIW things are looking pretty sweet. 😛

Is the 16bit color depth noticable while playing games? I can tell the difference between 16 and 32 bit on my 19" CRT.

It's not the quite the same thing as it is with a CRT. The LCD panels that must sacrifice color accuracy for a fast pixel matrix utilize color dithering to get about 20-bit color (perceptually), but most folks are not likely to notice, nor care to. In games, I don't think you would notice the dithering employed, whereas response time related blurring would more likely irritate you, so it's a good tradeoff for gaming. If you cared about color accuracy at all, say for professional image work, you wouldn't even be looking at LCD's as they're not quite at the accuracy of a CRT yet but they are improving. That aside, I've read nothing but glowing reviews of the 172X, and pay attention to any reviews you see and their timestamp as Samsung was sending out slower panels for some odd reason before it was available here in the states, but all shipping monitors use the advertised 12ms panel.

I do a lot of web design and browsing as well. I guess I will have to test the monitor out some how first to see if the color depth is to what I'm used to on my NEC FE991.

Doing some research and to my mistake, this monitor supports 32bit color depth... So, would there still be a loss in colors if this is what it supports?

Yes. You would have to pay very close attention to your RGB or CYMK color values even though it supports broadcast of 32bit color.... There are VERY FEW panels out there that can reproduce the accuracy of a CRT and those are still anywhere from $3000 to $8000 a pop. See the IBM T-221 for an example.
