Would it make sense to use a Raptor exclusively for the OS and applications? Do other people do this? If so, what kind of performance increases have you seen?

Sure, I do it. It makes every important program and the os load a lot faster. Raptors as a general rule are very very nice if you got the extra money.

I have 2 raptors in raid 0, and load times are shortened substancially.
Speed wise you won't notice a real big difference in the real world if you have a 8meg 7200rpm drive already.
But for copying files and loading programs, the raptor shines at.
I run mine on Intel ICHr5 sata controller w/acceleration enabled.

If you play games, it's pretty nice to be one of the first people to load up on games like BF1942, first dibs on the planes :p
