Ya, that's what I thought. Well, I was right and wrong. It took me about 5 minutes after getting back on a bicycle after 15 years to start pedaling. It took an extra month or two to relearn how to steer, shift my weight and turn with full control. After winter, it took another few weeks to learn how to use the rear brake for speed control, stability and hills.
A scooter isn't a bad choice to start with motorized 2 wheel riding. You don't have to worry (much) about stalling and shifting. Also, the brakes should be in the same position (possibly reveresed) as a regular bike. You could say it's slightly safer since you won't have a problem launching if some retard is about to rear end you. But then again, you should learn clutch control with a standard bike anyways.
One last thing: if you get a scooter, please learn to use your turn signals. I've noticed a few too many scooter riders, most with no leather or gloves, who forget to turn their signals off or use the wrong signal in a turn. Motorcycle riders probably do it too, but I just notice it more on scooties.
