Thinking about getting a high powered scooter 650cc.

After seeing one yesterday I looked into them, and they seem to be not to expensive around $8000 for a new one, and can go over 100 mph. They also have good mpg at around 50+. The problem is I have never ridden one and don't know how. So how can you learn to ride one of these so you don't risk crashing. I plan to be able ride on the freeway with it too, so I need to learn how to ride them well.

I just picked up a 150cc scooter. Works pretty well. I got 85mpg on my first fill up. Only does 55mph or so though, but that's all I need.

Maybe I need to start out smaller first and learn how to ride that. How did you learn how to ride your 150cc.

You should learn to ride on something cheap and used, because you will drop it.

Why do you think a 650cc scooter is easier to ride than a motorcycle?

It is Automatic, and a scooter just looks safer and easier. Can't really explain why. Just looking it, makes it seem easier to turn and such.

I think it would be harder. You sit in it like a chair.. Doesn't seem like you're firmly attached to it, or that it's as stable as a motorcycle.

I rode 150 miles yesterday and averaged 57.7 mpg out of my Suzuki SV650. That bike is fast and fun. Great great fun.

Can you ride a bicycle?

Take the MSF (Motorcycle Safety Foundation) course and get your license. That course is offered at local community colleges usually.

I think I can, I use to ride them all the time before I wen to college 6 years ago, but haven't been on one since. But they say it like learning how to walk, you never forget how.

The first thing you need to learn is how to "turn" a two wheeled vehicle at speed.

Uh, they say that about riding a bicycle.
Also, I have a feeling you are trolling. But then maybe I am giving you too much credit.

I drove it out of the partking lot and drove home with a friend driving my car behind me laughing his butt off. I got it on Thursday and I'm pretty comfortable with it now. It was really cheap, but it's a great one to start on because it's CVT, so no changing gears or anything. Just twist and go.

My father has a 450 suzuki burgman and its a great little scooter. It does 140km/hr, gets 4.2l per 100kms and handles very very well. Only things I don't like about it is how high and forward you have to swing your legs after taking off from a start but would get used to it after a while of riding and how the transmission but once again it is something to get used to.

Ya, that's what I thought. Well, I was right and wrong. It took me about 5 minutes after getting back on a bicycle after 15 years to start pedaling. It took an extra month or two to relearn how to steer, shift my weight and turn with full control. After winter, it took another few weeks to learn how to use the rear brake for speed control, stability and hills.

A scooter isn't a bad choice to start with motorized 2 wheel riding. You don't have to worry (much) about stalling and shifting. Also, the brakes should be in the same position (possibly reveresed) as a regular bike. You could say it's slightly safer since you won't have a problem launching if some retard is about to rear end you. But then again, you should learn clutch control with a standard bike anyways.

One last thing: if you get a scooter, please learn to use your turn signals. I've noticed a few too many scooter riders, most with no leather or gloves, who forget to turn their signals off or use the wrong signal in a turn. Motorcycle riders probably do it too, but I just notice it more on scooties.
