thinking about getting a dog for security reasons

It would be primarily an inside dog. Any suggestions?

I had my car broken into last week(at home) and I think a dog might actually have sensed that and could have made some noise to get me up.

Since I live by myself it could also add to an avoidance factor for any future break-ins. I was thinking I might just go to a shelter but are there any particular breeds of dog that make better guard dogs?

Get a dog with exceptional senses. My Bassett hound always lets me know that someone is going to knock on the door before they do.

German Shepard!!

Get it as a pup and you will have the most loyal guard dog you can imagine..... Plus they have personalities :) And are alert and can get very loud and intimidating looking when needed :)

Did I mention I have a German Shepard

Getting a dog for security reasons is the worst possible reason to get one

A motion sensor/alarm system is far more failsafe I think. A good security dog costs money and training.

Almost any dog will be territorial enough to at least sense/hear someone nearby and make noise to wake you up or otherwise alert you. I will say to resist the temptation to get something like an Akita or other fighting-bred breed; generally, the presence of any dog in the house will make would-be burglars find somewhere else to go. A good friend of mine has never had his house broken into, but he has to lock his damn dog up whenever he has people over since it's too unpredictable to leave out.

My dogs are 25 pound mutts and are excellent watchdogs. I know someone's near the house before they're even halfway up the driveway.

I've run into a dog that had to be locked up when people are over. It's a chihuahua, and she's just as nasty as nasty can be.

When I read the thread title I imagined a dog in a guard's uniform greeting people at the front door saying "Even though I recognize you, Chris, you know the rules. I still have to sniff your butt."

I used to have a long-haired chihuaha like that and he thought he
was 3 feet tall (he used to chase dogs 5 times his size)
A speeding car in front of my house turned out to be stronger than him
when he bolted after the mailman across the street :( :( :( :( :( :(

We had a german short hair with a touch of bloodhound in him when I was a kid. He was the friendliest dog but he also new when something was up. He could always pick out the guys that were up to no good. Best dam dog ever!

I got a Bordie Collie. She knows when someone is home by the sound of their engine. Pretty cool huh.

I have a boxer and they are really good with guarding the house. And if you have the dog from when it is a pup and give it the right training, then it will be able to stay out with people. They are very useful.

Kit (my Border Collie) is great. She can open doors, knows when people are coming home before they even leave their car, has no end of energy, and is good at scraping!

They can be total sh*theads. My grandmother had two that would go after my brother and I at the drop of a hat when we were kids.

Make sure you do your research about breed and security.. Sure training has A LOT to do how they act when confronted, but different breeds act different to intruders.

Sorry these are the only types I know, because these are the types that I looked at when choosing my dog:

Lab: Mostly just an Alarm dog, but they have a nice deep scary bark. Will attack if provoked (of course)

Mastifs: HUGE freaking dogs, but when provoked they use their size to pin attackers. Instead of biting, they will push the intruder into a corner and hold them there until you find them. :) If the intruder moves, they get growled at and bit.. hehe

Rottweiler: Very territorial, very pack oriented (meaning will protect your family well), will attack

I would say, do NOT get a Rottweiler or Pit Bull
(a gun would be a better choice)
Guns don't snap and start eating kids :disgust:

Every pitbull I have met has been really nice. They are stupid dogs so I wouldn't get one, but I've never met a mean pitbull (or Rottweiler for that matter. Nextdoor neighbor has a Rott and it is really nice as well).

BTW, German Shepards rock. Dont get a dog unless you love it though...otherwise it will be more of a pain than a pleasure

Get the RoboDog from X10!

It makes very realistic barking noises and is CHEAP!!!
I am not kidding. If they hear loud barking, they are not going to break in most likely.
