Thinking about getting a dog (1yr lab/shepherd) Questions.

So I recently bought my first house and now I want a companion. An employee of mine introduced me to a friend of his who has a 1 year old lab/shepherd mix female who seems to be have a good disposition and is crate and housetrained. I do want a pit mix but cannot for home insurance reasons so anyway to get to the point how quickly will the dog come to the conclusion that I am the new master? I feel like I'm snatching her away from her current master.

I adopted a ten month old puppy last summer. Thinking back, it probably only took a week to realize this was his new home but probably several months before he fully trusted me.

What is the reason why this guy is willing to give away the dog?

The dog is owned by a couple. The girlfriend is going back to school full time and the boyfriend works 60 hours per week so they'll have very little time to properly care for the dog. I have a very good for home for the dog which will be fenced in a matter of weeks and I have a school, a park, and three large baseball fields seconds from my home.
 
A lab mix will make a very good companion ... perhaps one of the best you can get. Our miniture lab died just a few years ago at the age of 17.

They make wonderful pets.
 
Do you have the time to properly exercise your dog? Going on frequent walks with your dog helps her accept you as the new alpha. Check out any of the books by Cesar Milan (star of National Geographic Channel's "Dog Whisperer"). We've found his methods to be very effective. Our dog has picked up our household's routine quickly using his methods, including plenty of exercise. She totals between 3-5 miles a day in walks. Expending her energy on a daily basis really helps her achieve a calm state of mind, with no real negative behaviors so far.

Okay, you guys were right, she's a great dog. A little stubborn but great. Fully house trained and getting some further training down quickly.
