Thinking about getting a Blackberry

I'm using an 8700 on Tmobile's network. I got this for work, so keep in mind, I have a corporate IT staff to handle all the backend stuff, which is fine with me.

In the past, I've used the 7100t along with an MDA for personal use. Hated the 7100 and the MDA was okay but too big and bulky in my book along with being an extremely slow unit with the underpowered CPU.

I'd say if you're primary goal is email then the 8700 is a good way to go. If you want to surf, get a Windows mobile based device.

The Pearl is great but not sure if it's unlockable yet. I passed on the Pearl and ended up going with an unlocked Treo 650 on T-Mobile a few days ago. I like it 10000x better than my old 600. I'm looking forward to the 680 and 750 as well.

Everyone I know who personally has a Blackberry dislikes them. If you don't have one yet, talk to someone/borrow theirs and see how you like them. I've never liked them from the limited time I had in IT with it.

I know quite a few people with BB's and they all say the same thing. For email, it's great. As a phone, it is absolutely horrible. I had one myself for about 4 days and I couldn't stand it. I went back to my treo 650. I'm wanting to upgrade to either the treo 750 or the unlocked tmobile dash (I'm on cingular). I like my treo 650 but it's SO big and bulky. I use it primarily as a mixture of phone, email and an organizer.

I hate mine. In fact I hate it so much I cancelled the data plan and only have a voice plan (effectively making it a glorified cell phone).

Reasons why I hate it:

1) Data plan was so slow
2) I wasn't able to find any content (other than the few sites the blackberry listed) that were useful and were viewable on the blackberry
3) Unless you pay for an enterprise blackberry server connection, your email inbox is limited to 10MB.
4) My email box would reach the 10MB several times a week. When it hit this limit, further incoming emails were discarded with no notification that they were being discarded. This effectively made me check my non-blackberry email clients as frequently as I was checking them already.
5) Sucks as a cell phone.

The only reason I really like it:
1) It integrates with email servers across address book, calendar, memo and todos so I can maintain one set of this information and keep it up to date on the blackberry easily.

I believe the Pearl allows you to visit websites in non-HTML format; real web browsing.

I like my BlackBerry 7280, though it is dog slow on data (non-EDGE) and costly as hell on my Rogers plan up here in Toronto, Canada. It's essentially a two-way pager, and sometimes if I really need it, Google Maps for the BB rocks the house.

I also currently carry a Windows Mobile 5.0 smartphone, the i-mate SP5. Syncs up beautifully with Outlook Mail/Calendar, as well as my Hotmail account and provides MSN functionality if I'm really, really desperate for that.

Then if you'd like the same sort of push e-mail service BlackBerry provides, you can use a free mail2web Live account and forward your e-mail to that account. Pretty slick.
