Thinking about getting a Beagle.

I shared a dog with my Ex, and when we broke up I let her keep it.

I live in a small apartment, but I'm fairly active and was always good about walking/running our dog on a daily basis.

I saw some Beagle puppies for sale in the local paper, and I'm thinking about getting one.

Any advice from Beagle owners out there? Is an apartment too small of an enviroment? I'm a kennel/cage trainer, as well.

A cat would be a better idea for an apartment pet. If you're set on getting a dog though, a small dog like a Beagle would be your best bet.

I think it'd be fine in an apartment as long as you walked it enough.

They are great dogs but can be very loud if not trained correctly.

My wife and I have two beagles (well, one is likely a mix). The purebread one can be stubborn at times and has more vet issues but they are both great dogs. Some owners have issues with excessive barking but we don't seem to have that problem. (maybe our neighbors would disagree :) )

Beagles tend to be hyper and need a great deal of attention (unlike Snoopy). They are very determined and you must be the pack leader or be prepared for everything being chewed and other behavioral problems.

My beagle was a mute. And yeah, you really need to walk them. And NEVER let them off a leash...they'll go where their noses take them, no matter how much you call for them.

I've owned a lot of dogs, and my friends and family have owned about every dog breed in the universe.

Beagles are one of the sweetest and most well behaved dogs I've run across - after they get about 4-5 years old. As younger dogs they can be very difficult to kennel train because they are essentially a working dog being forced into an indoor environment, and they can be noisy. Maybe you'll get lucky, but if I were you I'd look at a different breed as an apartment dweller.

Animal shelters are chock full of older dogs already trained and eager to be taken home. Please look into it. A small, shephard mix likely being the best bet for your lifestyle.

Beagles are loud especially if they are trained to be loud. My family adopted two beagles that were trained for hunting and they were great hunting dogs, however they would howl the second another dog came nearby. However, one night someone tried to break into my garage and my dogs flipped, and the robbers didnt stick around. They are the type of dog that their bark is much much worse then their bite. They are extremely loyal. Great with kids. They were very attached to my family, they would follow my dad around looking like lost puppies. Great pets. They can be somewhat smelly, and if they live out doors you can not wash them.

Good advice. Check the animal shelters and if you do decide to get the Beagle, get it spayed/neutered.

Pretty much what others said.

I can definately say Beagles need great deal of attention. My beagle goes nuts and start howling/crying even if I leave to go washroom for few minutes.

They are also hyper... Very hyper... Ran away once while letting him go out for a pee break, had to chase him in a blizzard with pj on for hour and half...

Don't get a beagle they're noisy as fvck and your neighbors will kill you or it.

Adopt a small shelter dog!

Beagles, in general, make better farm dogs than apartment dogs. And I absolutely agree that if you decide on an animal look into the local shelter. I've had a fair number of pets in my time (mostly strays) and I always tell people to look for a deserving (well-natured) animal in the shelter but they always seem to want the pure-breds. It's a sad statement about how we view animals IMHO.

Agreed in both spots... check a shelter as well...

As a kid we had one as a family dog, she was sweet and docile. Yeah she'd take off and go wherever her nose led so you had to keep on an eye on her (she *loved* to be walked and have a chance to smell out the neighborhood), and she went through a digging phase as well. I think generally they're curious dogs who if given the chance will go exploring wherever. She never bit anybody, I really can't imagine a dog that would be more patient with annoying kids. She was good about not barking too much, basically only at strangers walking through our yard. But I know some of them get pretty loud.
