so i hate my main computer. i have a "radiation station" as i call it (a 20 inch and a 17 inch monitor running dualhead off a matrox vid card) and a "power tower" (a big ass supermicro server case with 13 fans in it).

anyway, that all sits in the corner, taking up 1/2 my den, and all i really use is my laptop. i rarely, if ever, turn on the big computer (mostly cause it's loud)

So here's what i think i wanna do:

1) sell both monitors and buy 1 LCD
2) get rid of all 3 hard drives and buy 1 single big drive
3) replace my cpu fan with one that doesn't sound like a jet engine
4) sell my server case and get a tiny silent case

Hmmm...am i crazy? bigger used to be better, but now i just don't care. back in college, size seemed impressive, but nowadays i don't know (interpret this statement as you wish)

hmmm...maybe i need two lcd's......

is there a market for old monitors and tower cases?

Doesn't the benefits of adding extra fans wear off after around the 4th? but yeah, I switched from a full tower to a mid-sized tower, swapped 2x 5400 rpm 20 gb HD for one 60 GB 7200 rpm one. Freed up a TON of space :) Quality >> Quantity :)

well, dualhead is pretty darn sweet. i can put AOL and IRC and stuff on one monitor and keep the other open for web pages and photoshop and stuff.

did you sell your old stuff?

yes, the benefit of 13 fans is nill...in fact, it's just plain dumb....but i was young...and naive....

just get a pair of dell 18"s when they're on sale for like $380 every other week.

I still seem to always meet the people that brag about how their computer has 9 fans or 11 fans in it..

I like to brag about how hot my computer runs with only 2 fans at their lowest variable speed settings and it still manages to run perfectly stable.

I could care less if my computer was 190*F, if it's stable, then good.

I bet you just want a quieter system.. In that case, replace all the noisy fans with smaller, quieter ones. And use only the minimum required. Who cares if your computer only lasts 5 years instead of 10 because of the heat.. It's not like you'll be the one using it.

hey sohcrates,

I'll have to catch up with you sometime, I'm looking at LCD's as well. We'll have to compare notes.

Yeah, I pulled out a bunch of the fans in my case and replaced some of them with quieter ones. MUCH easier to think with the thing not sounding like I've got a jet engine running in my room.

I dunno if I'd go with a single hard drive, though. If it fails, you're screwed. But if only one fails you've still got some wiggle room. But that's personal preference, really.
