I love the job, but I don't feel I can maintain the frenzied pace for a forty hours a week. Yet, I've always worked 40hrs. Does this mean I'm turning into a lazy *****?

Short answer: yes.

Long answer: unless you eat hippos, yes.

no clue what you do or how long you've been doing it. not enough info provided for sufficient answer.

i think we all get a little less gung-ho with age though.

It's important in life to juggle income with free time. Find a balance that makes you happy - if that means less hours at work then good for you. If you're happy to have less "nice things" but have more time to relax and read a book or go to the beach then go for it. There is more to life than income

What does "get ahead" even mean? Ahead of what, your neighbours income? That's a load of crap. There isn't one sure-fire, one-size-fits-all prescription to success and happiness.

I'm a med-surg nurse, which means I spend 8 1/2 - 9 hours a day running nonstop from patient to patient (and lucky to get a 15min break for lunch).

I'm not sure if it's a burn out thing or not. I still enjoy the job so that counts for something. It just feels really strange to even be considering cutting back, but 40 hours of nursing isn't the same as working 40hrs in a cubicle farm.

Move to CA, here all you do is sit around and figure out when youre going to go on strike again for another pay raise.
