Thinking about Comcast Cable Internet. Anybody have experience with them before? Would I need a Modem PLUS router/hub?

Just wanna know the tech savvy people here think before I decide to sign up (I'm checking broadbandreports.com also for reviews). Also, if I'm planning on hookin up two computers, so I would need a cable modem PLUS a router, correct? (or would I needa HUB? Damn.. now I'm all confused)

Oh yeah, I'm in zip code 55429 if that makes any difference.

Used Comcast in Indianna - no drastic problems.

You can buy a combination cable modem/router instead of seperate items.

biggest problem I had was when I returned their modem ($5/month) they lost the fact that it was returned.

I just got off Comcast.
Had some annoying problems, which I got a tech to admit was due to the fact that in this area, they are taking steps to "crack down" (his words, not mine) on router users, which they consider bandwidth "theft."

Of course, if you pony up the extra $6 PER NODE a month, your router will suddenly work perfectly. :|

I am telling them where they can stick their crappy service on Monday, when I return their modem and cancel the service.

I've had an OK experience - it;s fast as hell but the tech support is ridiculously awful. When I first got it, they told me that an internal modem would work great, so I went ahead and got one. 6 months later, the service stops working. Their response? "Oh, you have a non standard modem." Needless to say, I was extremely pissed. I kept calling for a week, and finally convinced them to trade me mine for one of their externals - to keep, forever. The next day, of course, I call again to make sure it's going to happen and they give me a line about how "the manager that made the decision didnt have the authority." Well, another week, and i convince them to do it again, and they finally did. I would drop them immediately if they weren't the only broadband around.

I use a D-Link wireless router to share my connection, and I couldn't be happier with that. Comcast hasn't said a word.

COMCAST (the company) SUCKS!

But I still use their service coz I dont have other options. They lost track of teh fact that I returned my cable box and then charged me $255 for it. I refused to pay, and contacted them back saying I did return it, to which they said they would track it down and KEEP ME UPDATED!....no word from them, they reported it to the credit agencies... but I dont give a Fuc.

Their tech support people sound like they just want to go home.

I have Comcast (formerly ATTBI) and have no complaints. Was at one point MediaOne, then TW RoadRunner, then ATT BroadBand, and now Comcast. I've had the best service and support so far from Comcast, not to mention the fact that they doubled the upstream bandwidth (128k --> 256k) with no extra charge or even e-mail, just all of a sudden it was faster :)

ATTBI did the same thing to me like 3-4 years ago, but it was a $400 box. This is why you get and keep receipts when you return expensive items like that, especially cable TV boxes as they are infamous for getting "lost." As soon as I told them I had a receipt for returning the box, they dropped it quickly and with many apologies. Never feel bad about standing up for yourself and demanding a receipt. Anyone who doesn't want to give you a receipt is planning to rip you off, mark my words.

I have the cable internet service in Sacramento, CA and service would die for a couple hours every few weeks. I haven't tried the customer service, but it's been good so far.

I used to have Comcast - but my connection to my cable modem would get dropped all of the time, so I dropped them. I'm now a happy Knology Cable customer :D
