I own a 2003 Hyundai Elantra and I'm going to be doing a lot of traveling next year. So I decided to go for an MP3 car player. After doing some looking around, I came to this head unit by JVC. It looks good, has a nice screen interface, 24bit Resolution, 7 band EQ, MOSFET, and a motorized face. I can also get it for $280 shipped. Your thoughts? I really don't want to spend any more than that, but I'm open for suggestions.

i think its cool... i highly considered its predecessor (9700) before finding a deal on my alpine 9813... jvc are supposed to make terrific mp3 cd players

however, have you considered getting a normal plain cd player with aux input, and then using a portable mp3 player?

jvc makes head units with front aux inputs that are perfect for this application. get yourself a 250$ creative zen with excellent sound output, and you'll never have to burn a cd again!

the other benefit is that you can make multiple playlists on the zen (with songs from the 20/30gb collection), and play them in the car w/o having to burn CDs for specific moods or swapping CDs in and out

I would get one that has an aux input. You can plug your mp3 player, laptop, etc into it and really have control of what you listen to.

How's $250 sound?

Oh wait.. you said you can get that one new for $280...

Go for it. I love the JVC mp3 head units.

Save yourself some money and get a eclipse locally. Way better sound quality. If your headset on it though, its not horrible.

How much better? I've always thought that going with audiophile stuff in a car is kinda weird since you will have some noise no matter what. But more info in the eclipse please. Never heard of them.

Whatever you do, don't buy from Crutchfield....waaaaaay overpriced.

I got the Pioneer DEH-P750MP for $275 shipped here.

It's a much more feature packed and advanced model than the JVC, and it is cheaper than Crutchfield is for the JVC.

That's a fine deck for you. I've owned 3 models in my time and have friends who own others. Unless you're a full out car audiophile, that'll work. I have one of their 9000 series decks, forgot which one.

Anyway, it was cheap, looks nice, and works w/o any problems. My favorite options are:
- random folder or random disk
- different display options, and support for id3v2
- lots of eq settings

The rest of the options I don't even use lol. It does come with a line-in (aka auxilary in), so you can attach any other player or laptop if you want to.

I just checked your link and yea, that's the one I got ;) I have the 9700 though, dunno the difference of the top of my head.

I owned the sh99 and the difference between the two is a much improved display so you can actually read the deck in daylight. The previous model's display was too weak for that.
