Thinking about buying AMD's stocks

Would it be correct to say that if AMD could manufacture the Phenom at higher yields, say around 2.8ghz + they would be competitive with Intel again?

I'm really thinking about buying a bunch of AMD stock because it's so cheap right now and I don't believe they'll be in the dust forever.

Nope.

AMD needs 4+ GHz Phenoms with headroom.

They're royally screwed for as long as i can see forward.

My thoughts on AMD are in the thread linked by an earlier poster.
That thread is still pretty much active too, so I'd recommend you post there if you have any questions/anything to add and let this thread die already.

For the enthusiast market? No. But for the budget or oem market.....maybe.....cheaper processors and motherboards with no discernable difference in performance for anybody not running benchmarking utilities.

Also, don't forget that ATI is AMD now and the 3XXX series is actually competitive and ATI might beat NVidia to the punch with their next gen parts. ATI is also in the Wii and Xbox 360.

I plan to buy soon, personally, but as a long term investment and not a quick flip. If ATI provides the processor for Xbox 3 and if they stay on track for Fusion, then there's hope.

Their earnings report this past quarter wasn't that bad actually and gives me hope for them in the future. The bulk of their losses are attributed to the ATI acquisition, and hopefully once they get past that they can bounce back.

The question is how and if they get past it, compare their product roadmap against intel and how each company has perform recently. Intel is on their A game, this past year they've been delivering against their aggressive tick-tock strategy, while amd delayed w/ barcelona and the bug with their TLB.

Just remember that AMD had a hard time making money even when they had the fastest CPUs with much less power draw. Intel and AMD have been pounding each other to dust, and it looks like they're willing to continue to do so.

That said, it looks like the only way AMD stock will get higher soon is if someone ? does a takeover. Even that could backfire.

I've always liked the AMD CPUs, but it looks to me like they're outclassed in the business arena and the combination is driving CPU prices down to commodity levels for everyone in the business.

sort of off topic, but what would happen if they went bankrupt, might the US bail them out and pay off their debt or would the banks sell all their fab plants, etc to the highest bidders?

Since you asked, yes, put in an until filled buy limit order at $8, as AMD is a hot deal below $8/share.

You would be wiser to invest in renewable energy and organic farming, however.
