Where would the guy with the "modded" Saturn fit into the equation in terms of a stereotypical thinking rational?
That he is commuting to college.
My saturn would beat many GT's though. Which would piss them off.
I piss them off in a '06 Avalon. It's too funny. They act like jack asses with the same mentality as ricers and try to tail gate and flash their brights and stuff after they lose at the merge. Even though they started it by swerving into the ending lane that everyone else was was getting out of, revving, and peering over and sneering.
So caught up in the Mustang and V8 image of yesterday that they don't see that even Camrys and Maximas have almost 300 HP now...
The problem is that a younger generation is now able to afford those Mustangs as the cars have gotten older. The younger drivers do tend to drive like they're immortal and want to show off to their friends, or feel like they're better drivers than everyone else because they go faster.
I have a '99 GT. I think it was actually manufactured in '98, so sometime next year it will actually be 10 years old. It has held up fairly well over time in terms of performance vs. the newer more expensive cars. When it was new, it was significantly faster than an Accord, Camry, or Maxima of the time. Now, vs. a new one, you're probably right, it would be very close, and maybe lose. Not too bad for a 10 year old car that wasn't even all that expensive back then.
The Mustang is still the benchmark though. Even though it probably shouldn't be. I'd go with GTO or if you want a Japanese car EVO, as the new benchmark. But that's up to the masses, and mindshare is with the Mustang still.
I test drove a new Acura TL a few months back. The salesman was surprised when I told him that my old Mustang makes the same horsepower as the TL. By seat of the pants feel, the Mustang was still clearly faster than the TL due to torque, but the difference really isn't that earth shattering.
It's pretty much the result of this fantastic horsepower war the car manufacturers seem to keep going. For my next car I'll be happy to get into a bigger car that's just as fast. But I definitely understand buying a Mustang, especially a convertible. It has a high coolness factor for cruising around town. I'd like a convertible one if I got another, but I wouldn't want a convertible to drive daily.
I'll probably be in a 2009 G8 as my next car. Hoping for an LS3 by that time.
