Thinking about buying a used Mustang GT.

$15,000 seems a bit steep... I've seen an occasional Mach 1 go for $16-17k.

Keep checking prices and see about talking the price down a little.

Edit: Scratch that, didn't see the 'convertible' part.

Nice stereotypes made up out of envy. Every time I've looked at an import car message board they are comparing their cars to the Mustang. It is the benchmark of low budget performance cars.

hardly. it may be the benchmark of rednecks with small wangs, but that's about it.

The V8 Mustang IS the benchmark of budget speed in this country, and if you don't know that you don't know cars.

I don't own one, and it's not my scene, but you've got to respect the aftermarket that the Mustang has to offer.

I love it. Import guys are always bashing the Mustangs and Camaros even though those are the cars they are ALWAYS gunning for, and domestic guys bash Supras when it's the import they are gunning for with every mod they add.

Why would you set your standards so low and be proud of beating any of those cars if you thought they were junk?

People don;t put exhaust, filters, etc... on their car to "pamper" it. They do it so they can flog the hell out of it.
Now the level of flogging may differ, but I would check it out with great doubt.

Exdeth is planning on adding alot of things to his car and isn't interested in racing it. Some people just want to know they have it rather than use it.

Personally I think non-modded cars get abused far more than those that actually put money into their cars.

Maybe the econo-import guys...but the RX7, Supra, 240SX, S2000, SC300 crowds usually pay no attention to Mustangs and Camaros. Your Terminator is about the only serious stock contender. Most of the mustang/camaro crowd just throw on big tires and an exhaust then think they are going to take out Z06's and twin-turbo 911's.

The fun part though of beating a Mustang/Camaro guy is they take it so seriously. I used to like saying to the GT guys 'It's ok, if you had the V8 you would have won'. In my Mustang days (66 GT and 88 GT) the texas guys were notorious for losing a drag then running you down and off the road after the race was over. Some messed up shit.

Where would the guy with the "modded" Saturn fit into the equation in terms of a stereotypical thinking rational?

That he is commuting to college.

My saturn would beat many GT's though. Which would piss them off.

Shows what you know. I'm no redneck and your old lady loves my wang. Something about it looking like yours only bigger.

Great use of your 15th post since joining in July. 😕

I piss them off in a '06 Avalon. It's too funny. They act like jack asses with the same mentality as ricers and try to tail gate and flash their brights and stuff after they lose at the merge. Even though they started it by swerving into the ending lane that everyone else was was getting out of, revving, and peering over and sneering.

So caught up in the Mustang and V8 image of yesterday that they don't see that even Camrys and Maximas have almost 300 HP now...

The problem is that a younger generation is now able to afford those Mustangs as the cars have gotten older. The younger drivers do tend to drive like they're immortal and want to show off to their friends, or feel like they're better drivers than everyone else because they go faster.

I have a '99 GT. I think it was actually manufactured in '98, so sometime next year it will actually be 10 years old. It has held up fairly well over time in terms of performance vs. the newer more expensive cars. When it was new, it was significantly faster than an Accord, Camry, or Maxima of the time. Now, vs. a new one, you're probably right, it would be very close, and maybe lose. Not too bad for a 10 year old car that wasn't even all that expensive back then.

The Mustang is still the benchmark though. Even though it probably shouldn't be. I'd go with GTO or if you want a Japanese car EVO, as the new benchmark. But that's up to the masses, and mindshare is with the Mustang still.

I test drove a new Acura TL a few months back. The salesman was surprised when I told him that my old Mustang makes the same horsepower as the TL. By seat of the pants feel, the Mustang was still clearly faster than the TL due to torque, but the difference really isn't that earth shattering.

It's pretty much the result of this fantastic horsepower war the car manufacturers seem to keep going. For my next car I'll be happy to get into a bigger car that's just as fast. But I definitely understand buying a Mustang, especially a convertible. It has a high coolness factor for cruising around town. I'd like a convertible one if I got another, but I wouldn't want a convertible to drive daily.

I'll probably be in a 2009 G8 as my next car. Hoping for an LS3 by that time.

Seen a bit of the G8; impressive. Reminds me more of an Acura or something than a Pontiac.

I'm holding my breath here; they are going to need a S197 Mach 1 with a DOHC N/A 375+ HP 4.6 and all the rest of the Mach 1 touches and sell it for under $30,000 or less if they want to regarded as a benchmark in the new upcoming pony war.

The $45,000 GT500 with $15k dealer rape isn't even going to be a contender at that price, people will buy the Camaro no contest. There is a big gap right now between the GT and the GT500. Even still the GT500 is a bit disappointing after all the hype and the dealer price gouging that persists to this day. The Shelby branding was a mistake. And for it's price, with it's extra displacement, bigger blower, and 100 more HP, but 400+ lb weight gain and solid axle, it's more of a side grade from the last generation.

Bring back Coletti and put SVT in charge of the whole Mustang line if Ford wants to make serious competition in value AND performance. Thats what it takes to be a benchmark.

Or a GT350, but take off the Shelby sticker and the $25,000 off that goes with it. Then people don't have to wait in line a year in advance and compete with investors to get one while everyone else is driving Camaros. A N/A GT350 for $35,000 sticker price with the power level of the Terminator Cobras, and there would be a line waiting to buy them. Only a line of ordinary people who will drive the cars home, not investors buying up blocks of them to trailer for resale (PS3 syndrome).

With the Exception of the last two Cobras and the Mach, Mustangs have always been lackluster in performance compared to the competition.

But then on the other hand, the Mustang was never meant to be a balls to the wall all out muscle car to compete with the GTO, Challenger, Charger, etc. It was just a stylish fun affordable little car, with just *enough* power, that non gear heads could enjoy cruising around in... hence coining the term pony car as an offshoot of the muscle car genre.
