ad was a mis-print. *sigh* there are still good rebates available on the car, but it's not nearly that cheap.
I am a big proponent of buying used cars and driving them into the ground because it generally makes economic sense. but this seems too good to pass up:
Dealerships in my area have been running increasingly ludicrous deals on Mazdaspeed 6's over the course of the past year. clearly they were having difficulty moving them and now they've reached the end of the model year and REALLY need to get rid of them. The latest is for $15,799, for a new 2006. MSRP is about $28,000. The KBB trade-in value for this car when used is around $24,000. $16K for 274 HP in a new car is an eye-catcher, for sure.
the way i see it, at that price, i can drive the snot out of it for 3 years and i ought to be able to trade it in for not too much less than i paid for it (maybe more?). 3-year old Mazdaspeed Protoges sell for around $15K in my area. I would expect the far-superior 6 to hold its value about as well.
alternately, if i can actually get the full KBB trade-in somewhere, i might just flip the car in a few months for something more appealing, like a Legacy GT, or potentially get a decent used car for nothing.
i guess what i'm asking is if this is wishful thinking on my part, driven by my greed for speed?
incidentally, my criteria for my next car are that it be fast, reasonably practical, reliable, and would hopefully have AWD for the snow (though I can deal with chains). I do NOT expect mazda's 2.3 turbo to be a reliable 200,000 mile engine, but if all goes according to plan, i do not expect to own the car for more than 100,000 miles. if the car was selling for MSRP, i would not buy it because of my reliability fears and the fact that i would need to it to last a long time.
before anyone says it, the WRX is not an option because insurance is so outrageous (you can easily afford a Legacy with the difference in insurance alone!).
