Thinking about buying a home theater projector

I have a couple issues before buying a projector, namely, room size isn't one.
1) rainbow effect due to dlp technology, is the upgrade to 3lcd for the price better?
2) Long term life span of a dlp projector if well taken care of (not considering bulb life really, since they generally last 3000-5000hrs.)
3) Is this a better choice compared to a current lcd/led-lcd tv out these days at roughly 800-1200 dollars?

this is one im currently looking at:

1. You need to see the projector in action to determine if you can see RBE on this projector. If you can't, it's good for you.

2. Bulb life is going to be your big issue here. Generally, these devices will last well beyond the point at which you would already be looking at newer shinier things.

3. This is a totally different beast than your typical LCD TV (or any flat panel). The image will be huge and will generally be most pleasing in a very dark room. You don't say what you're going to use the projector for. This projector appears to be aimed mainly at gamers. The throw ratio is pretty insane (probably so you can stand pretty close to the image without blocking the projector). If you intend to use this for Wii or Kinect games, this will be highly valuable to you. If you're not into that sort of thing, you might want to look around at other options.

Check out the projector forum (under $3,000) at avsforum.com. There are a lot of comments about this exact model.

Thanks for the info! Yeah Im just going to use it for movies/games, mostly movies. I seen this on bestbuy and was like this seems perfect if not for dlp.

I would attempt to pay a bit more and get a 3lcd projector.

I had an Epson 6500ub and although not as nice as what I have now it was a great introductory projector.

It is somewhat weird that DLP is used in either lower cost projectors and extremely high cost projectors like the runco.

Go see which ones you like and audition them in person.

I've seen some LCD's (Epson 8100 and some entry level Benq) and I just felt like they were a little...computery? My Mitus 3800 DLP on the other hand just felt like a much more natural picture.

LCD's have awesome image adjustment, placement options, and tweaks you can do though.

I prefer the more natural look of DLP to LCD. Have only seen the rainbow effect once on an all white screen with a cartoon object.

Also, no filters to clean with DLP. Mine is 4+ years old with about 1300 hours on the original bulb.

I still have no idea what the "Rainbow effect is" so I'm obviously not prone to it, or if I am I don't seem to mind it.
