Thinking about buying a cable modem, what do you think?

I've been reading on some posts about buying a cable modem, and although it sounds good to save $15 a month on a rental fee, upgrade issues is a concern. Here are my questions:

1. Which cable modem should I consider? Which one gives the best performance?

2. What about upgrade issues? When the industry still goes to DOCSIS 2.0, what is going to happen? Are we just SOL then?

3. Is it going to be compatible with my cable modem companay? I use Time Warner, but could be moving to Cox @Home soon.

4. How much should I expect to pay?

Thanks for your help!

I wouldn't worry about it. Keep in mind that while you're concerned with upgrade costs, the cable companies are even more concerned. It's very expensive to upgrade their equipment to support new modem standards, which is why there are still a lot of areas across the country that aren't even on DOCSIS yet.

If a new standard does come around, you'll have plenty of warning before they switch over to it, if they ever do. Unless the new standard offers features that the cable company just can't live without, they're going to be in no hurry to upgrade 😉
