Actually I commend him for coming forward. He found a weak point in the network, exploited it. Didn't use the information he received in a bad manner. I hope they just give him probation and let him off.

I mean come one; the guy turned self in, apoligized for what he did. The network admins should thank HIM for finding a flaw instead of some real "hackorz" who would undoubtably use the info for "evil" things.

That sort of thing is interesting:
Someone hacks the network for free (though without permission) and then tells the admins about the exploit. He gets arrested.
Another person hacks the network for a hefty price (with permission) and tells the admins about the exploit, and it's ok.

One thing about hacking a system without permission, or any criminal activity - learn also how to cover your tracks. "Ahem. I am robbing a bank now! Please don't try to arrest me, because it would greatly inconvenience me, and interfere with my work, thank you!" It just wouldn't work.

Maybe if that was his origional goal, and he went to them quickly with the information then yeah, he would be a good guy. But im guessing he didn't turn himself in untill they were hot on his trail.

But what he did is still Illegal, and there are a certain set of laws for it. If this guy was so smart, perhaps he would have learned the laws beforehand and not done the crime.

No kidding. Might as well go down the police precinct and start grabbing guns out of the lockers.
I think he'd get 2 stars for that. Maybe 3. ...But he could change his clothes and be down to just 1. :D

Its tough man. I'm a grad of UT Austin's CS program myself.

the girls are FUGLY, courses suck, life is boring. I would have probably tried to hack into things myself if I didn't have a bunch of non CS friends. I don't excuse what he did but he was probably just bored one day. least he didnt' fck anyone up.

hx0rs 4 life?!?!

i think it shouldn't be a problem with hacking as long as you immediatly alert the network admin.....i would be thankful if someone did that for me.....and didn't F*** anything up....just to find the hole
