Actually I commend him for coming forward. He found a weak point in the network, exploited it. Didn't use the information he received in a bad manner. I hope they just give him probation and let him off.

I mean come one; the guy turned self in, apoligized for what he did. The network admins should thank HIM for finding a flaw instead of some real "hackorz" who would undoubtably use the info for "evil" things.

Real hackers wouldn't. Real hackers do what he did, except probably inform the target sooner of the weakness and don't leave them hanging with a huge data loss scare.

lol that isn't a great hack job. he just did a brute force attack on the system. i'm just glad he didn't get my ssn (i go to UT).

*edit* and of course he turned himself in. they located the computer he used within a day of the attack. it was only a matter of time before they would have taken him to jail by force.

1. Obtain written permission from the institution authorizing him to develop a program or a method to discover potential weaknesses of the system.
2. Develop his program or a testing method and present it to the institution.
3. Obtain written permission from the institution authorizing him to use this program or method, at HH:MM on XX/XX/XX.
4. Execute his program or method on the date and time which was agreed upon.
5. Immediately notify the institution in a written form of any weaknesses he discovered.

i hope he doesnt serve too many years. one year is max. he did turn himself in, after all. i see him as being a guy who got bored as a CS major and wanted something more challenge. he pursued his interested but did it irresponsibly. no harm done. just a lot of panicked people.

We don't have all the details but from what I've read he didn't profit or exploit the information he had and did no vandalization. I think community service would be more benificial to the community than putting him in prison. If you go to college your ssn is everywhere.......

Every hacker must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, regardless of whether they turned themselves in or not. If they are not, it sets a dangerous precedent and sets up a defense for all of the hackers that get caught, be they black, grey, or white hats. We would have al Queada agents set free when caught for hacking by saying "I was just finding holes in your security so I could tell you."

A lot of the large corporations who get hacked usually keep it under wraps (bad for business, etc.). They do, however, analyze how the hack took place and learn from it by strengthening their systems.

You'd think that the Univ of Texas would do the same. Actually, instead of pressing charges, they were in a position to learn even more since they knew his identity.
