Question Thinking about an RX 5700

If someone were to say the following to you, how would you respond?

"DX12 support in AAA titles will be extensive in 2020 and beyond. I am going to buy an RX 5700 for 1440p gaming. That card can run everything at nearly 60fps/1440p right now. In two years, that won't be true, but I will use Radeon Image Sharpening to extend the life of the card by a year or two. I am typically happy when I get 48 fps."
 
Already has a hard time with that now in certain titles... but you can just adjust visuals to compensate.
 
I'd say that was a reasonably argument. I ended up getting a 5700XT because it handles 1440 better and think the 10-15% better performance is worth the cost.

So I'd suggest to anyone who wants to game at 1440 to see if they can afford the extra cost of a 5700XT. Depends on how much that "extra cost" is at the time of buying, though.
 
That or you can get a good cooler on the 5700 and "unlock it" to 5700 XT.
 
Great value card, I think it's much better value than the still unreleased RX 5600xt, I'd suggest to everyone pondering on buying $260-290 card, to save up and get the RX 5700. Its worth it.

Even the RTX 2600 option isn't that bad anymore as the card can be found for as low as $210 $310, so for those hell bent on buying Nvidia, its a much better option than the now irrelevant GTX 1660ti. In fact if you don't have anywhere close to $300, I suggest you go out and buy a 1660super, its almost as fast as the 1660ti.

AMD needs to get out of their high horse, they still suck in the GPU space and stop pretending their Ryzen success translates to the GPU space, when it doesn't. They need to lower the price of the RX 5600xt to something like $240 or $250 to be competitive!

^ I agree, or at least give it the 8 GB it needs. 6 GB is kinda low, especially considering RX 580s and 5500XTs can be had with 8 GB.
 
They won’t cut prices until they have more wafers. If they’re selling at a steady rate cutting prices doesn’t help them sell more cards. They just sell the same amount of cards faster than they would have otherwise and potentially end up not having cards in stock which just incentivizes people to flip cards on eBay.

Unless the supply channel is building up due to low demand, there’s no reason to drop prices.

Would you mind sharing where you can get a an RTX 2060 for $210?
I think you meant GTX 1660 Super.

Yes, get the RX 5700. In my mind, it is the best value GPU on the market; and the best compromise between price, performance, acoustics and thermals

Not if you're mining. GTX 1660ti still outpaces RTX 2060 and GTX 1660 Super in performance/watt for mining applications, even if performance/$ is lower than either one of the others, for gaming.

GTX1660ti has its niche.

There are deals all the time, in fact there are new versions from evga that will sell for as low as $280 for a RTX 2600 in the near future!
 
$320 for an RTX 2060? That's a far cry from the claimed $210. Surely, if there were a deal for $210, there would be a record of it on SD.

IMO aftermarket 5700 flashed to 5700XT BIOS is the best value for $300 on the market right now. If I had to buy a new video card that's what I would buy. It is a shame that the best coolers are reserved for 5700XT models though.

Evga and Asus were selling those single fan 2060's last summer for $275-290 AR. The reviews for those cards are not stellar to say the least. The Evga one at least has a good heatsink but its a 2.75 slot card which means its not going to fit in a lot of itx cases.

That makes more sense, thanks for clarifying. BTW, I read somewhere recently that NVidia was reducing the MSRP of RTX2060 (I think the non-Super) cards to $299. That might explain some of the "Sales".

I agree as I went the 5700 route also and going to flash it to the 5700xt. I got the XFX Radeon RX5700DD Ultra ($315 shipped) which has a XT cooler on it and also has a dual bios so I figured would be a great card to try it on.
 
next gen xbox is going to be faster than the 5700xt and offer hardware RT, the current cards are going to get old really fast in Q4.

but if you need a card right now it's pretty good, I just think that if you already have something fast that it's better to wait for the upgrade.

Despite how much I hate current gpu price to performance, especially in light of new consoles coming, there was still a part of me that could have talked me into to buying a 1660 Super or 5700 to play Cyberpunk 2077 at 60 fps. But now that it got delayed to September 17th I might as well wait another month and a half and play it on PS5 at 60 fps.

The 5700xt does not deviate from MSRP very much because demand is steady for it. However it is just steady and sales could be better. We are seeing lots of AIB 5700xt fall under MSRP and AMD had to sweeten the pot by adding a game bundle to the package.

The 5700 series on the other hand goes on sale on a regular basis significantly below it's msrp. It is not difficult to find a 5700 for 299. Even the highest end AIB 5700 goes for 360 dollars which is just 10 dollars over MSRP. So why is this happening?

Logic dictates these sales are happening because demand is not quite meeting supply which is causing the price to fall until demand meets up with supply. The market is correcting itself until an equilibrium is reached where the 5700 true perceived value by the public is reached and demand maintains this value.

This is also being reflected by Nvidia's gain in marketshare after Navi's release. Nvidia profits grew after Navi's release. Navi accelerated Turing sales which is reflected with Nvidia gaining marketshare since Navi release and Nvidia revenue rising significantly in q3 post Navi. Turing sales were not great prior to this because people were waiting for Navi and were expecting Navi to have Polaris like pricing. When Navi didn't and the super series came out, most people just bought the super series because the 10% better price to performance was simply not enough for people to pick AMD over Nvidia when you add the Nvidia brand and RTX. A gain of 5% in 1 quarter is huge and considering prior to this, Turing had no competition, it shows you Navi actually accelerated Turings sales.

Now Turing sales are near mining height level because Navi's high price has helped the Turing's high price be accepted by the market place because people were expecting AMD to save the market not cooperate in what looks like a price fixed market.


People flipping Navi cards without mining demand is simply a fantasy for AMD and Nvidia at this point. With all the sales for Navi cards compared to Turing cards, we have the opposite happening with AMD and their AIB partners having to lower pricing for their cards to move.
 
I am still watching prices for the 2060 KO and 5700. The problem is that Nvidia has their new 7nm GPU's coming just around the corner.

Arguably, mining's not dead, and the fact that there is only limited mining capability with Navi right now, whereas Turing can be used to mine a whole range of algorithms, and in a very power-efficient manner, to my mind, is what is really driving the market. (Yes, mining still!)

But do we know those will be gaming cards and that Ampere won't be another Volta focused on only Tesla cards? The thought of a Turing Refresh being Nvidia's big 2020 gaming products makes me want to puke.

Looking at Nvidia's earnings really ticks me off. Look at their net income over the years. They directly benefited from the bitcoin mining craze. In computing there is the old syntax error. The tax man has sin taxes. Nvidia's margins increased dramatically between 2017 and 2018.
