Pay - probably not much...no idea really.
What it entails - from what I've seen: installs, shotgunning, and making excuses.
Experience - Hahahahahaha! I think they just make sure you have a pulse.

Thorny - Id guess around $9 for pay, have no idea tho.

As for thier job - they install software and OS', format, run norton antivrus..lol, install hardware, make up BS diagnosis on the spot in front of customer.

As for experience - Im sure they'll probably require A+ cert or a damn nice resume......

There are testing centers all over. The test should be around $100 and is fairly easy.

The A+ certification consists of 2 tests - a general hardware test and an OS test (for OS, you can choose Windows or Mac). Each test is about $130 if I remember correctly, but you can find discount vouchers from various places for about $100 each. Upon passing the 2 tests, you get the A+ certification. If you have experience with PCs already, I would imagine that looking at a couple of A+ review websites would be enough to pass. Otherwise, you might want to get a book on it (there's one by Meyers that is highly regarded).

I think most of the places that have techs that work on PCs (BestBuy, CompUSA, etc) require the A+ certification.

I think I'll look into taking the test even if I don't apply for the job at best buy it sounds like a good thing to do so I can get a job making more than minumum wage. How much money do techs make at other places, ala not retail chains....

Really? Is it that easy? I have no professional certifications but want to get at least one...

I build my own PCs, trouble shoot the installs, etc (just like everyone else here at AT!) Do you think I could pass the A+ Cert?

Shesh; always thought that A+ was a programming language, like C+ or something...

Basically what you'll do is ring out all computer purchases. During this time YOU MUST get every person to sign up for MSN or you risk being fired.

take a look at www.bestbuysux.org

I thought it was pretty simple - I just skimmed a book on it, and took a few practice tests I found online. I scored pretty high on each test - I don't remember what the passing score was or what my scores were, but I remember them being pretty far past the passing point. I think they're pretty forgiving on the tests - like 60-65% to pass. If you have been working with PCs for a while, you'll easily pass the hardware part. The OS part seems to focus more on Windows 2000 and a little 95 now (it used to be DOS and Windows 3.1). It isn't anything tough, but the questions they ask may or may not be something you've dabbled in before. You might want to find a book and review the OS part a little more than the hardware part. Look for the A+ Certification book by Michael Meyers (not of Halloween fame), 3rd edition. That one covers the current objectives. I used it and it was all I needed. I didn't read the whole thing, but I skimmed the chapters and took all the end of chapter tests.

Invariably, you'll run into a few questions on the real test that you haven't seen before, but you should easily be able to pass without too much effort.

However, keep in mind that these days, especially with the tech job market being the way it is, that an A+ by itself probably won't open any doors for most jobs.
