Thinking about a PS3

So I am torn. My first console purchase this generation was a Wii when it came out. I pretty much got it for Zelda, but since then I have purchased nothing but first party games. Like many other hardcore gamers I have not played it in months. It is because of this that I am thinking of putting it on craigslist and using the proceeds to by a PS3. I want to play some of the exclusives that are, or are coming to that system, and I wouldn't mind the BD playback either.

I am torn because I really like first party Nintendo games, but I don't really see any good ones down the line. (Please correct me here). I would totally regret missing out on the next Zelda though.

I have to tell you though, that I already have own 360 and both my GF and I play on that. My GF plays more than I do actually : ). I am also not a PC gamer.

Knowing this, would you trade in and give up the Wii exclusives for BD playback and PS3 exclusives? You can discount the multi-plat games since I could pick those up now on my 360.

What do you expect to get for the Wii? I wouldn't bother selling it if you don't need the cash. It's good to have options when enw games come out.

Well I have the console and an extra controller and nunchuck as well as Zelda TP, Metroid Prime 3, Super Paper Mario, Mario Galaxy, Rayman Raving Rabbids, and Mario Kart that I could sell. I should be able to pick up a PS3 and a game for that.

I would keep the Wii but I just won't allow myself to have all three consoles. It would be too much money invested, and I can't justify it. I've told myself the max I would have at one time will be two consoles. I am not getting rid of the 360 because my GF likes it too much. So it's between a PS3 or my Wii.

Blu ray is very nice on my 50" DLP, and with netflix I don't ever need to buy the discs. The PS3 is still one of the best players and will keep getting firmware updates for at least the next few years.

Have you made a list of what PS3 games you would probably buy? You'll be able to download demos for most to try before you buy, but you should probably make sure there are enough to justify the cost given you have a 360.

I want a 360 (be quiet mugs! :) ) but am finding I can keep waiting to buy it since I have a PS3 and gaming PC and so many games in my unplayed stack. It's the same reason I don't have a PSP or DS yet, it seems silly to buy another console when I have 20+ unplayed games for the ones I already own.

FYI, there is a rumor that Sony will be dropping the PS3 price by at least $50 in April. It makes sense but it is just a rumor.

Yep, it gets expensive to buy games for more than two systems. It all depends though on which games you like. If you're more into hard core gaming, buy the PS3. It also makes an excellent media centre and HTPC. If you're just looking for casual games, keep the Wii. It's a lot of fun. You'll probably get a good return on selling your Wii though because they're still hard to find in some areas.

I have a 360. I would gladly trade it for a PS3... I also have a Wii - which I wouldn't trade for anything.

The only thing I really like about the 360 is the controller. I hate how small the Playstation controllers are - and the fact they really haven't redesigned them. The 360 controllers just "feel" better. Other than that, in my eyes the PS3 is the better system in nearly all ways.

Not for cross-platofrm games though, the PS3 still almost always has lower image quality than the 360, and some games (even without MS payments) don't get DLC.

That hasn't mattered to me since I have a gaming PC for titles like Fallout 3.

Eh, I have all three. PS3 sees a lot of playtime, but only because I'm always playing PS2 games on it. In terms of "stuff from this generation", the 360 gets way more time than the PS3 or the Wii.

That said, there are some good exclusives on the PS3, and it does play Blu-Rays and DVDs quite nicely.

Get the PS3, but I wouldn't sell that Wii just yet. I've read a lot of Wii news lately, and it seems to me that publishers are really starting to pick up interest in this system. For instance, EA has commited 50% of it's development to Wii over the next year(s) (including an exclusive NFS game with a more arcadey feel - which is up my alley at least, I'm more Daytona USA than Gran Turismo), and they are not the only one [who have stated the will produce more "hardcore" Wii games].

/speculation
My thoughts are this. Most developers probabl thought that interest the Wii would start to fade in '08, and that the PS3 and X360 would start to get into high gear and overtake it. That didn't happen. The Wii went on to break even more sales record, leaving both X360 and especially PS3 in their dust. The Wii has shown that it has legs and is easily the most successful system this generation as far as console sales. This, combined with dissapointing game sales (how much did EA bleed again), and the high cost to create HD content for the PS3, X360 have convinced many publishers and developers to put more development dollars into the Wii.

From a business standpoint, it makes sense. For example (numbers pulled out of the air), if it costs only 50% as much to make a Wii game as a PS3/X360 game, but sales are at least comparable - it makes financial sense to make a game for the Wii. And if times are really tight, maybe making it only for the Wii.
/end speculation

As far as the PS3 goes, I also have been toying with the idea. The Resistance and Uncharted series look so good; but I am definitely waiting until later this year. $299 for a PS3 w/160gb HD and a free game sounds good to me (hope that happens this year).

I did this exact thing. Got bored with the Wii and really wanted HD video. With HD-DVD dying, my 360 add-on was a dead end. Plus, I really wanted MLB 08:The Show, so I dumped the Wii on craigslist and used the proceeds to get a PS3. I had a 360 a long while before the PS3, but I still think the PS3 was a great buy and I wouldn't give it up. BD looks and sounds great and the PS3 exclusives that I've played (Uncharted & MLB, specifically) make it very worth it, in my opinion.

Long story short, do it. You won't be disappointed.

I am a sucker for first party Nintendo games. So I'll keep my wii (covered in dust at the moment) just to have around for the next mario's and zelda's, etc.

But i love my ps3. I'm really glad I ended up buying one. If it we're me, I'd keep my wii and save for a ps3 also. Circuit City is going out of biz and all their consoles are 20% off now (might be 30% off at some stores) you can get a pretty good deal on a ps3 then too.

I'd almost even say trade it now, and get a ps3 and you can always rebuy a wii later on if there's some great 1st party stuff

That's what I am thinking too. I love most Nintendo first party games (not looking at you Animal Crossing or SSBB) but I have a feeling it's going to be a while before the next "hardcore" (I hate using that) Nintendo game.

I have been wanting to play some Uncharted, Resistance, LBP, and now KZ2 for a while now.

Some guy offered me a 60GB PS3 on craigslist for my Wii. Although it sounds like a good deal I was hoping to get one of the newer PS3 models with less wear. I don't have any intentions of playing previous gen games.

You guys think offering a mint Wii with everything that came with it in the retail box (including the box) plus extra nunchuck and remote, and official component cables for $300 is too much?
