Thinking about a Philosophy Major...

Asides from probably teaching, is there anything else I could use it for? I want to be a cop and it won't really matter what kind of degree that I have. If that doesn't work out or I don't like the work I would probably continue on to my law degree, which also doesn't require any particular type of degree. I really like philosophy...any reason that I shouldn't major in that?

Well, go philosophy, do the minimum pre-med requirements and if you can half-ass the MCAT, you have a good shot at Med School. If you kill the verbal. Thats what a lot of English/ Literature majors do.

linda lee: "what can you do with a philosophy degree?"
bruce lee: "think deep thoughts about being unemployed"

Philsophy is a good-all around major. A lot of businesses and graduate schools like it because it's a "thinking major". Again, because you have to analyze symantics so much, it's is a pretty good pre-law major as well.

But what is philosophy? I mean, can one truly major in philosophy? What is a "major"? Is it the essence of the classes you take, or is it the peice of paper that a university hands to you after giving them money and earning some passing grades?

Think about working at a coffee shop when you graduate. 😉

Actually, if you want to be a cop, a Criminal Justice major would be your best option.

Philosophy is an excellent pre-law major.

Is that why so many lawyers are dumb as stumps and have no clue how things actually work in the world?

I did not say most lawyers were philosophy majors. Perhaps you need to take a logic course 😉

Or something of a technical nature. The FBI, CIA, DEA, NSA, etc gives preference if you are a technical major, ie. Computer Science. Of course, you will have to work your ass off for 4 years in college.

It's interesting, but it's pretty useless from a "getting a job" standpoint.

Repeat after me.

You want fries with that?

Unless you plan on teaching, I don't see what real use it would be.

But then what do I know!?

I know this guy who has a degree in philosophy from Yale. He has three part time jobs: bartender, and two doing something with computers*.

He is really intelligent so I am sure he could probably do anything he wanted.

*He has never gone into details and I have never asked for them.

You may be able to parlay that degree into a job as a negotiator....
