Thinking about 802.11g...

Is it worth it? If I'm going to get the wireless stuff doesn't it make sense to get the g "standard"? Are there any possible downsides to it? I can pretty much get an access point and pci adapter for around $200.

Actually, now that I look at it... What's the difference between a "cable/dsl router" and an "access point"? It appears the only difference is the ability to run hard lines to the router, correct?

I'm looking here. btw. Thanks for any clarification.

Steve

Do not be tempted for any 802.11g at any cost.

There are only 2-3 products on the market, and they are bug infested.

Wait!!!

The difference between a router and an AP is significant. An AP is merely a wireless hub. Just passes data and in no way can it share your broadband connection alone. It can be part of the solution but not THE solution. If you want to share your internet connection wireless you should probably look at the Router/AP combo units.

Ahhhh. Okay; then back to the hot deals forum for some "b" stuff. 🙂

Thanks a bunch,

By the way, 802.11b has 11Mbps but greater than 802.11a, which has 54Mbps but less range. Unless you buy an antenna booster.

but if you buy APs and 802.11g craps out on you will 802.11b still run flawlessly?

the G stuff is so cheap anyways

This is rather a wishful thinking than reality!!!

Which Brand of 802.11g you are runing, and how much you paid for it?

Actually I am not running any wireless at all.

I was thinking about G though

FWIW - Both Belkin and Buffalo guarantee their 802.11g products will be "final spec" compatible whether they can do it through a simple firmware upgrade or if they have to ship you another router/ap.

True, but you have to decide if you want the hassle; it's a fair point, but I'm leery of anything not standard.

IEEE is scheduled to vote sometime in May. Then compatibility testing. Firmware "should" be released in June or July on existing draft equipment. I wouldn't expect a 54G certification sticker on new hardware until late summer.
