3 guys each gave you $10 to buy some <insert bad stuffie here :) >, so you goto <insert bad place here :) > to pick up some of that thingie, which only costed you $25. So you have $5 left over. You gave yourself $2 for being the <insert cool name here :) > You go back and give each of the guy $1 back, so in essence they each only ditched out $9 instead of $10, for a total of $27. Now where did that extra dollar go?? :p

The product only cost you $8.33, with some cash for you, and then the rest back to them.

Each guy paid out $9, for a total of $27.

You took the $27, kept $2 as tip, and bought merchandise with the $25.

I don't see what the problem is.

Where did what extra dollar go?

Did you make a typo in the problem...

$9 x 3 = $27 - $2 (for you) = $25.

The numbers work out fine....

<< but he took all $30 before he left for this cool place :) >>

I still don't get it.

He took $30 with him. Paid $25 for the stuff.
So he had $5 left in his pocket.
He kept $2 for himself and gave $1 each to the other 3 guys.

$2 + $1x3 = $5.

I don't see the problem at all.

The problem is worded in a way to trick the reader; there really is no extra dollar.

Each person spent $25/3 = $8.33 for the "product"
and each person "chipped in" $2/3 = $.66 for you "tip"

Therefore, each person spent $9 for a total of $9*3 = $27 spent by the three people together. That means you have $3 left from the original $30, and that's how you were able to give $1 back to each person.

$25 (stuff) + $1 * 3 (a dollar for each guy) = $28

$2 (tip for yourself) + $28 (from above) = $30

BTW $28/3 != $9

I've never heard the riddle before. I'm trying to understand it...

I don't get it at all, I don't see where this so called extra dollar is coming from. All the numbers add up just fine....

I've heard this riddle, and thought it was stupid then. Even worse, when I tried to explain to the guy who told it to me that "25 / 3 does NOT equal 9", he said that I had the wrong answer. And this guy was a high school teacher.

Well, I think he told it wrong. He's supposed to say:

"Now, if each guy gets a dollar back then he paid $9 for his share. 3 x $9 = $27 and you get two dollars. $27 + $2 = $29...So where did the other dollar go?"

The riddle is trying to trick you into thinking that each person spent $9 and you kept $2 for yourself which only amounts to $9*3 + $2 = $29, hence the "extra dollar".

The $2 that you get is funded by the $27 that the three guys paid.

You take out the $2 tip, $25 remains.

You bought merchandise with the $25.

I don't see how anybody could get confused by this.

lol, I'm not sure of the exact wording of how the riddle goes, but just heard a caller on ArtBell's radioshow said it and thought it'd be fun to relay it back to you night owls or those working night shifts :) please don't hurt me :p

Ahhh okay. I see how it works now.

If you make the statement that $27+$2 = $29 it makes it a little different.
Though it's totally irrelevant to the question 27+2 is in fact 29, and that can confuse the reader.
I understand now, thanks for hte help :)

BTW, learn how to divide properly. How is that a brain teaser? There is no extra dollar.

Gosh! I've seen this so-called brainteaser at least three times now, it's starting to get annoying. :p

Oh well! I must admit that it's a good puzzle for non-math lovers 'cuz it could easily misled one who isn't good in maths (i.e., hey wouldn't easily observe the error on the part of the puzzle). :D
