Think this is OK for word processing/internet usage? For a friend who doesnt have a comp?

It's for a friend without a computer... is this tolerable do you think?

Pentium 200MMX
Windows 2000 [Or should I use Win 98?]
Intel 430TX Mobo
128MB SDRAM Pc-66 (2x32, 1x64) [Will this not be all usable on a TX board???]
4.3GB HDD
56K Modem (no broadband available)
Sound Card
32X CD-ROM
floppy

Also... does anyone know of any free internet providers either nationally or in the Seattle area? Thanks!

I think that should work fine. I used to surf on a p133 w/ 16 megs of ram, so that'll handle the job quite nicely.

does anyone know if this will handle win 2000 ok? or not? Also will this mobo be able to handle 128mb ram in the cache do you think? Thanks?

With 128MB I'd use 98, but if you had 192 or more, you can use 2000 on a P200.
I had a P200 at work before I got my Athlon.
It had win2K on it.

welp i think im going with 98 se.... anyone have an idea on weather or not the TX chipset handles over 64MB ram well?

Not sure, but even 64 MB should work pretty well for 98SE and p1's can handle single DIMMs. Be sure to run a decent memory-test program either way.

I have a Compaq P200MMX with 112MB of RAM and it runs win2k just fine.

It even ran it with 64MB

98SE was a little livelier on it, but not much

my old computer (p1, 166mmx) was running win98 wtih 32mb ram
it was slow, but it would work as long as i didnt go crazy with ie windows, or open 1 ie window and something else

either way, you should be fine

i dont know of any problems with TX chipset and over 64mb ram....

I wouldn't run Windows 2000 with under 256MB of memory. 192MB is doable, but it isn't the greatest. For anything less, Windows 98SE is probably the OS to go with. I hate to recommend it because Windows 2000 is so much better. Under the circumstances I have no choice. You could try for Windows 2000 if you really want, but it would require a good bit of tweaking before enough memory was free to have a smooth-running system.

The TX chipset supports a maximum of 64MB cacheable memory. Windows assigns memory from the "top" downward, while caching starts from the "bottom", meaning the data that gets put into memory first won't get cached, until you fill up anything above 64MB, then the data that starts going into the cacheable area will get cached by the L2.

For the uses it's going into in this case, it probably won't be terribly important. Since you're building it, it couldn't really do any harm to try it both ways. Set it up using 64MB to start with, and run a few easy benchmarks if you can find anything that'll run on such a system anymore, and judge for yourself how it "feels" when browsing the web, installing applications, or playing games. Then install the other 64MB (make sure the system recognizes all of it) and compare. The extra memory might make some things run better, while other applications might like having cached memory better. Windows98SE will run well enough in 64MB, and very basic things like browsing the web won't tax that excessively either.

I would use 98se it is quite a bit faster with not much memory.
Does he have a ISP yet? if not I would recommend copper.net.com Service is good and it is 10 bucks a month if you live where they have a phone number.

I have an old computer that I put 2000 on...Pentium 1 166, 128MB SIMM RAM, and my god it is slow 😉

Aside from the slowness, it does work, and is usable
