Think the new iPod touch will be out before the back-to-school rebate has ended?

I was looking at last year's dates, and it looks like the iPod touch was released on September 9, 2008. Last year's back to school rebate ended on the 15th. So, people who waited until the end of the rebate program were able to take advantage of the rebate with the newer touch.

This year, it looks like the program ends a little earlier, September 8th. So, the chances of getting in on a newer iPod touch seem slimmer.

Any thoughts?

It'll be close. You MIGHT be able to exchange it if its >2wks from when you bought it, so I'd buy towards the end of the promo either way. Or just buy now, sell the current touch on eBay, and buy the new one when its released.

So what you're saying is... if I wait until the 1st week of September and IF the new iPod touch is released before Sept 8, I'd be getting the new gen Touch instead?

On my rebate form, it lists them as "iPod touch 32G, 16G, 8G". Does it restrict the rebate to the 2nd-gen Touch on the terms & conditions somewhere? Are the new gen-Touch's going to be named the same / have the same capacities?

I had been all set to order my 13" MBP at the end of this month, but after seeing your post, I might just wait another month...

I cannot verify it, but it does correspond with what I remember as well. Regardless of what updates there have been in the past, the only ipods eligible have been those eligible at the beginning of the promotion.

It's Apples way of clearing old stock and almost certain they won't be offering 3gen.'s for '09 rebate. I would wager a beer they won't even offer an 8GB touch w. next revision. If you want one, get in on the promo but spend a bit more and get at least 16GB. Was in the same boat last year and wound up buying a 32GB 2nd gen. and selling 1st. If you do resell the 2nd gen. for a 3rd, the more storage the easier it'll be to make a quick sale.

Exactly. The rebate won't be applicable to the next-gen models in any way, it's specifically structured to clear out the old stock and avoid discounting the new models.

Thanks for the info all. If the new Ipod touch has all of the rumored features, I'll save up my pennies for next year's back to school sale (and stick with my iPod mini and hand-me-down laptop for this year).
