He can't take the guns, so he's going after the bullets.

Do not really understand this decision. Yeah, true M855 is basically milspec surplus and I don't care if the government restricts it for resale to civilians. AR owners having to pay more for civilian branded ammo like Federal or Winchester doesn't bother me.

The rationale behind it is stupid though. Typical police body armor isn't designed to stop anything beyond most pistol rounds and shotgun pellets, so pretty much any caliber designed to be shot from a long gun would be "armor piercing" by that standard. That's like banning resale of old Army jeeps because you could use one to run over a cop, just like you could with any other car.

His executive order wasn't struck down, it was temporarily blocked while a law suit from 26 states goes through the court.

The director of the ATF is an obama appointee so this latest proposal does not surprise me one bit. Whether it is trying to limit who can do finishing work on a receiver, going after bank accounts of those in the firearm industry, refusing to import WW2 era firearms, etc. etc. The current executive branch is attempting to bypass congress as usual in their attempt to impose gun control.

ATF has been pushing back about AR15 pistols for a while now, this isn't really that surprising. It's just as inane as allowing the pistols to make short barrelled AR15's legal, and then allowing arm braces for said pistols, saying that using the arm braces occasionally as a stock is fine, and then suggesting that what they already said was ok actually could be considered creating an unlicensed short barrelled rifle...

M855 was never super popular due to being more expensive than M193 and the fact that it typically can't be used at indoor ranges or on steel targets. But M855 is no more armor piercing than any other rifle round. The ATF banning it because they claim it could be used by criminals to kill police is the thinnest veil of an excuse ever. This is just revenge against gun owners over losing the inter-state handgun ban court decision.
