Think my rig will last through '09?

When I ask this question I don't mean that it will still function, it probably will as I have computers from '95 that are still working fine. But I ask whether or not it'd be useful though '09 in the sense of playing games etc.. I have my mind made up on the situation but I just want to see the opinions of this forum like only if XX is upgraded etc.

What about with these changes to be put in:
7800GTX (equivalent)
2GB of ram
Possibly a higher overclock (3.8ghz?)

Yes or no?

In reference to the HDD space, I have a 750GB fileserver that I keep all my music, video, cd images, school work, etc. on so the only thing that *should* be on the desktop is video games.

Buy some anti-electromigration powder to preserve your cpu. ;)

Today's latest games already demand more than that system can handle. The video card is a guaranteed bottleneck. 1GB memory is OK in most older games but 2GB is the new standard. Upgrade those two, as you have suggested, and you should be good for a while. Through 2009? savvy said it best.

It all depends on what you do, if you use it for only email and basic office applications then it could last untill 2012.

This sums it up nicely, you already have a system that in some areas is pretty dated for modern games already.

Your CPu is still fine for most games and the graphics card adequate but not great for many, but just try throwing things like oblivion at it and it will struggle. This may be the extreme at the moment but in a years time it might well be the norm.

Nope, won't do. Your processor is good, but it won't last. The video card is also pretty much done, too.

Lots of people use Win2000. A good majority of those people are in server environments, though, but a lot of anti-XP people use 2000. IIRC, everyone agrees ME was a POS.

I'm sure it'll still work in 09 with maybe a HD change (I don't expect any HD to make it more than a couple years really) but whether it is powerful enough to do anything well that's another matter ;)

he makes a good point.

What you think my processor will die from overclocking? Doubt it... Runs a decent temps and I've got airconditioning so it doesn't get hot here really. Processor can last for years due to them having no moving parts. Only thing I can think of is the fact that the system runs close to full load 24/7 overclocked, I'd say the processor it self will last at least till '10, what do you think?

No, in it's current form it probably won't last through mid next year with the latest games
Yes with more upgrades including a bigger HDD and better video card

If youre not overvolting and temps are good electromigration is not a problem.

As for the longetivity of the system, The CPU will last a while, the graphics card is outdated now. I would consider a 7900GT or an X1900XT when the price drop comes around.
