Think it will be possible to overclock the X-box?

Since the X-box will essentially be a PC, do you think it will be possible to overclock the P3 inside of it? I think that if you crack open the case and either change some dip switches or do a lil soldering on the motherboard, you could probably overclock your X-box. What do you think?

No.

Besides, what's the point? All the games are going to be running at 60 fps anyway. Plus all the games are meant to run at the default spec, so overclocking will net you nothing.

piku- then why were testers complaining about Halo running sooooo slow when they played it at E3?

Are you sure about that, Piku? I think the games designed for X-box are designed to run on the X-box specs at 60 FPS. SO, if you overclock the CPU and perhaps even the Geforce (is it possible to overclock video with hardware mods?) then it will run faster and smoother.

Dip switches? Yeah right. Soldering? Probably too much trouble. The performance gain would be minimal because the games will be designed to get maximum quality/performance from the stock hardware, so you might gain like 1-5 FPS, which you wouldn't even notice on a TV.

You cant go faster and smoother than 60fps on a TV.

I'm sure someone will eventually figure a way out (hey, it can BSOD. why not overclocking too?)

You know this how (BSOD)?

piku- then why were testers complaining about Halo running sooooo slow when they played it at E3?

Those games were running on XDK's, not the consoles.

You should know that human eye can only see about 30FPS. The reason more FPS is better for PC games is because the FPS count drops depending on how complex the scene. The more FPS you have, the less you notice the drop. In COnsoles, you get a steady number of frames (60 is fluent enough). It does not drop like the PC games.

Its been in development for what, 3 and a half years now? XBox will be out when? November 8th? It better be running more than 10fps cause otherwise its damn pathetic.

There would be little point. Any games released as Gold will be running fast anyway and overclocking would be kinda pointless...

Not in terms of FPS, but in terms of loading times and basically how fast the OS will run. Is X-box running its own OS or will it use windows?

For the PC it has been in development for like 3 years. But only in the past few months have they started porting it to the Xbox. Plus all of the Xbox stuff is still beta. Give them time... 5 months is forever when it comes to console gaming.

Besides, the Xbox version of it is going to suck ass. No internet play. I don't even know how they are going to make the game without internet play (since the original vision was a huge online war) but it will be interesting to say the least.

P3-733... 133mhz bus. you wouldn't o/c it very far anyway. Do you think you'll be able to boot up your x-box and go into the bios or something? or do you think they'll have some jumpers convienently there to make people void their warranties? gimme a break

Its using a Windows 2000 kernal with a minimal footprint. The whole thing is under 5 megs I believe.

But as far as getting a desktop or anything - no, its not happening. The OS is included on each game CD. There will be a dashboard that comes up when you turn it on with no game in it, but that is simply for memory card management, CD playing, and stuff like that. There wont be a trace of Windows.

(edit:

<< Kami, MS announced they were putting a 1ghz in it... >>

No, its 733mhz.

What Skorb said. Its pointless.

Of course it can BSOD
its created by microsoft :/

Okay... Anyway, some guy here posted a link stating that the x-box crashed and gave a BSOD. But in the site, it doesnt say anything about a blue screen, it jsut said the XDK crashed. Just like some Cube games crashed, cause they are beta software.

Sigh. When will people learn? Your eye can see well above 60 PC game frames. Theres no motion blur in games as there is in real life. Intermediate frames = more blur. 60 is the minimum for lifelike movement. Not that I want any more.

TVs dont refresh over 60hz, and thats interlaced, so you're not going to need more than that, because even if you could see it, the tv couldnt display it.

As far as overclocking it and installing an OS on it, It'll probably be done. People are already installing (running) linux on dreamcasts. With a hard drive itll only be easier. THe xbox board will likely be similar to an Nforce mobo, the graphics will be similar to gf3, everyone knows all about intel processors. Theres more than enough information out there for some crazy fool to figure it out.

I'm expecting some sort of pencil bridge connecting method, like with durons and casio pocket pcs.

sure you can overclock it. once they release the nvidia chipsets we can make os patches that will overclock the chips just like any motherboard. i'd rather run linux on the box anyways.

5 megs? try a couple hundred K or so. the os is a totally stripped down win2000 kernel. games ran slow at e3 cause the sound was being emulated by the processor and not the MCP as will be in the final unit.

<< Bill Gates has confirmed that an extremely stripped down Windows 2000 kernel (500k size) will be the operating system of the Xbox. He emphasized that the OS would not make the console's load times sluggish like a PCs. The Xbox will load as fast, if not faster than any other console currently available. >>

BigDee, I;m just spewing out what was taught in school, the teacher didnot go to any details such as lifelike movement etc etc...

I do believe people can install other OS's (like dreamcast and PS), but Its still pointless.

Radeon, You can always go check out ign, and watch the videos. :)

The Xbox has a clock, so I don't see why you couldn't. might be a lot harder than what you're used to though.

But what is the use anyway?

SSP,
I still disagree with the human eye can only detect 30 FPS. I know, I know that's what you read everywhere. maybe for the average human, but c'mon...we've been playing games for 10-20 years don't you think our eyes have tweaked alittle bit? I for one can tell a big difference between 30 and 60 (not talking about video games but animation and sports broadcasts)
