Think I should upgrade?

My system is:

XP2800+ clocked to 3200+

512MB ddr3200

Asus a7N8X delux

evga Geforce 6800GT with NV silencer

380W antec silent power supply

Audiotrak Prodigy 7.1 sound card

I am really considering upgrading my CPU to an AMD 64 3700+ with a gig of ram.

Would the speed increase be worth the cash at this point? It is only a matter of time before I buy Half Life 2 as well.

Increase your ram to 1gb. You can always upgrade later on the cpu & mobo and still use the pc3200 (ddr 400). 🙂

To save lots of money, just upgrade to 1GB of ram. Tho I can say that the XP is somwhat of a bottleneck for the 6800GT.

RAM to 1GB. Other than that, you're ok for a bit. I'd give that CPU another 6 months, then try to move to an Athlon 64.

I originaly had 1 gig of ram and then I made my GF's computer official female by taking the rib o' ram and putting it in hers after her stick went medusa on all her games and froze them.

I am using buffalo ram; would it be prudent to just order a couple sticks of another brand of ram off of new egg?

They (new egg) are having a deal on a gig corsiar value select. I'm thinking of ordering it up tonight unless anyone has some better suggestions.

Since the Athlon 64's use the same ram I am thinking it would be worth it to pay more for some faster ram instead of going for the value select.

with that the value ram so cheap at 1gig, just order 2 new sticks (no doubt of un-matching sticks then). Then you can donate your other 512 to your GF's computer.

If you have a stick of Corsair CMX512-3200C2, donate it to me so I don't have to buy it from newegg for $100 + tax...

Newegg's deal is -
Corsair Value Select (Dual Pack) 184 Pin 512MBx2 DDR PC-3200 - OEM
$138.27 + $4.73 s/h = $143 + tax if applicable. Damn CA tax.

Yes, you could do that. You could run hl2 definitely on the 512mb though. I can run the great with good graphic with a 9800pro on 512mb crucial 3200 ram. But I would also suggest upping the RAM if you are looking at an upgrade.

Thats exactly what I had in mind if I opted for waiting for the more expensive upgrades.

I'm going to order up the gig of Corsiar and buy Half Life 2.

Much cheaper than a CPU/Mobo.

I think hardware is really cool so I often have to remind myself to only upgrade if I need too. LOL

@ Baked: If I had that stick of RAM I would gladly hook you up but I have run of the mill Buffalo ram. I've learned a lot about PC's as I go so I have'nt always made the best purchases like I would now. LOL

I have a similar system (2500 @3200, 6800oc, 1 gig) and it played HL2 fine with (not as well with 512mb), i would upgrade that before anything else.

BUY RAM!

Had I known at the time about the OC abilities of the 2500+; I would have opted for that CPU in a heart beat! I'm happy I got my 2800+ while everything was still unlocked!

I still have a sealed retail Barton 2500+, brownie, Y, AQXDA, 0314. Got a matching 0313 running in my system right now. Originally bought it for MSI K7D Master-L, but crap happened, and that plan never materialized.
