broken pipe under my sink, landlord has a deal w/the plumbing company so it's billed direct. think I should tip the guy? maybe 45 minutes work. he didn't want a beer ;)

edit--the guy finishes, after a good 10 minutes of near-shouting into his radio. He asked me to walk down to his truck with him to sign the paperwork to save him another hike up and down the stairs. Ok, so I went down there and he gives me a blank workorder and asks me to sign it.

I said "I'd prefer if you filled out your part first." He goes "you're the 2nd one today to impugn my integrity". WTF, I say "don't take it personal, that's the right way to do things." He spends 10 minutes fussing over it then gives it to me, I scan it and sign. He goes "you didn't even read it." WTF again, I say "sure I did". He points to one part and goes "you don't even know what those abbreviations mean". So now it's GO-TIME with the plumber. I said "who cares, I see the $112 at the bottom and I know what that means." (seemed reasonable for 45 minutes & 3 pipes). He just shakes his head and laughs out loud, and I walked away.

He's probably out in the street blocking up my sewer right now.

fvck no.
The guy probably makes twice as much as most of us software developers.
I keep telling my boss I'm going to quit my job and become a plumber so I can double my salary and be safe from outsourcing.

Are you a good tipper?

I developed a work order system for a sheet metal / plumbing company a couple years ago. One of the things it did was calculate costs and print out reports for each job. So I saw all the wages for the employees. The hourly wages for the plumbers ranged from $30-$50/hr depending on experience. Those are the actual wages the employees are paid, not the amount that the company charges it's customers. Plus they got 1.5 time or double time for overtime hours depending on whether they were on a weekend or not. After running some of the reports, it was obvious that most of the employees worked overtime on a fairly regular basis.

It was kinda depressing to know that plumbers with very little experience were making 60-80k per year.

You did the right thing. I do HVAC repairs and on rentals I won't put the price but I will put my time and the repair details down. The plumber doesn't make $75 an hour, the shop does. Where I work they charge $75 an hour and I only make $20.50 an hour. I think I need a pay raise. :D

There is the training that they get before they are fully "admitted" into their union, which is strikingly similar to education. Could you just pick up a wrench and start doing a bunch of plumbing work in your house or would you ask for some help or read directions first?
