I've had it about a year now.... Its an Inspirion 8100 - PIII 1ghz, 512mb, 15" UXGA, 30gb, 64MB DDR Radeon, 8x DVD, Etc....

I love the rig and it works great, the problem is... It weighs about 8-9lbs and now that i've been having back/shoulder/arm problems for the past few months, carrying it around in my backpack case has really gotten to be quite a chore... I started physical therapy a few weeks ago for my problems, and have been noticing some improvement, but whenever i carry my laptop i still get some pain....

Do you think i should sell it and maybe try to pick up a iBook/powerbook 12.1? Maybe a new ultralight Dell/Toshiba? Do ya think the weight difference would be worth it?

FYI, before anyone says it... I didnt get injured from carrying my laptop... Its from a car accident... The heavy laptop just aggrivates my condition...

I got a hold of this for $700 w/ rebates. I dunno if you can still get that deal though, but it's a great laptop. Does everything I need it to.

Well... if it's causing your physical hard, then get rid of it. Check out eBay for similar models and see what they are going for.

I predict you'd be disappointed moving from a 15" UXGA LCD to a 12.1" LCD.

I know the 12" iBook is all about portability, but they probably could maintain the form factor with a 13.3" or even a 14.1" LCD. Obviously, cost is a factor for Apple as well.

None of us would know if a lightweight notebook would aid your physical condition. But the weight difference is huge. I personally would never buy one of those massive 8+ lb. desktop replacement notebooks.

If you're not ready to switch to Mac OS X, then an IBM Thinkpad T40 ($$$) could interest you. Unfortunately, you aren't going to get too much value by selling your Inspiron. Best case scenario would probably be a trade.

If you want a really ultra light ultra light, go for the Sharp Acticus MM-10. 2.1lbs 0.5 inches thick. Kinda pricey, and uses a transmeta processor, but I still want one.

yea, i think you're gonna be unhappy with the size of the screen change going down to a 12.1" lcd from the 15" one. maybe get a IBM T40 or a Dell 600m or D600 or a powerbook. it depends. can you just get a hand case for it instead?
