Think I screwed up!!!! CMOS problem

Hey all, Ive got a small problem with my computer. I just RMA'ed my crappy Abit KN9 SLI a few weeks ago and just got the new mobo yesterday. I reinstalled it, double checked everything and hooked it up. Heres the important part, I pushed the power button and the computer turned on and everything lit up and spun up. Problem is the screen didnt return from standby and I couldnt hear the hard drive working or the computer beeping.
After a few retries and turning the PS off and on I decide to reset the CMOS. Inside I noticed that the MB had shipped with CMOS in reset and I had turned everything on in reset mode, so I flipped it back to standard and then the computer wouldnt turn on, though the voltage lights are lit. So I flipped it back after a few tries and it restarted, but again no display.
Guess my question is what did I fry? Or could it be a porblem with this motherboard? Could I just replace the CMOS chip if I fried it?If I fried it Ill feel like an idiot but I was frustrated with this whole RMA process so I guess I was in a rush, bad idea! Thanks for your responses,

Sounds like they sent you a bad motherboard, but could also be ram or the video card, try 1 stick of ram at a time to see if you can get video. If that doesn't work see if you can test a third stick that is known to be good.

You can't fry anything by turning it on with the CMOS jumper set to the reset position. It sounds like a gimpy board to me. You might try completely unplugging the PSU from the wall and turning the PSU off and reseating all the power wires to make sure the board is reset.

Yup, I know my CMOS won't reset unless the PSU has been unplugged for about 10 secs.

Alright Ill try reseating and unplugging and reseting what I need to! I doubt anything has gone bad, since it was perfect before I returned the board, but if all else fails Ill check it and post back here when I'm done later this evening.

Here is the situation now: I unplugged the PSU and all power connections to the MB, while doing this I reset the CMOS and did a reseat for the memory modules. Reconnected everything, put CMOS switch back to default and tried a restart. Again the power switch wont work with the CMOS jumper in the standard position, but will work with it in the reset position or when I leave it completely off. Even when the computer does work it still wont load the BIOS and the HDD LED is stuck on, all other components are working(Disk drives open, HDD's spinup). Would people agree its a bad mobo still? Any other tests I could try? Try back later,

Put the CMOS jumper where it should be, then disconnect everything from the motherboard except the CPU and CPU fan. Remove the memory modules. I mean bare minimum, motherboard, power button, CPU and CPU fan. See if you can get it to turn on enough to turn the CPU fan on. It should give continuous long beeps, asking for memory. Add a stick of memory and see if it works. It should give no beeps, just run. Then turn it off, add a video card if you need one, and plug a monitor in. If you have onboard video use that instead for now. Now you should be able to see the POST screen. If it works to this point then just add keyboard, mouse, hard drive(s), optical drives one at a time until it quits working, then you know where your problem is.

I don't believe you can corrupt the CMOS by working the jumper wrong, so it doesn't sound like the board is dead.

Power switch shouldn't work at all with cmos jumper in the reset position.

Exactly what I was thinking, its like there is a short or crossed line. I wouldn't think it would work at all with the jumper removed either. Ill try removing parts and see what happens, but if I dont get a result I like quickly I'm going to get ABIT to ship me a replacement ASAP before I ship another board back. Can't wait another 3 weeks to ship my old board out and get a new one back ya know!
