Windows Vista Home Premium / XP Pro SP2
AMD AM2 X2 3800+
2GB Corsair DDR2-667
MSI K9MM-V
XFX 6600GT 8X 128VRAM
380w Antec TP-2 PSU

I tried formatting, checked PSU by changing over, ran memtest and also ran prime95 everything checked out...........

So I figured it was heating, I undid my fan off my GPU and there was a square of white stuff only an outline, like the middle where it needs to be is all burned away. The fan is secure etc.

So I run a program that is a desktop HDR tester for performance while running speedfan and my DRIVER diagnostic tool also using RivaTuner.

I found my IDLE is 65c and I found this to be semi-normal but not really concidering I did a side-by-side test with my friends setup similar but with a X1950XT PCie and his ran 65-70c FULL LOAD.

So my computer was playing Counter-strike 1.6 FINE and I didnt know why it was freezing on Half-Life 2 etc. So I ran CS- 1.6 and my heat didnt even touch 70c full load. But when I throw HL-2 on it jumps from 60-65c idle to about 94c in less then 5-10 minutes.. it then freezes, I ran the program off my desktop, and it crashes twice on 94c. As did HL-2. So I figured out why old games werent crashing but new games were.

I checked my BIOS for heat fail parameters and it wasnt set to shutoff at 94c so i'm guessing, my GPU is over-heating. What can I do to fix this that's cost worthy?

ok I've had this card for almost 3 years, havn't changed anything on it or over-clocked it at all. I've been reading and people are saying their 6800's and 6600's are running 90c+ and they have no freezes, why are my games freezing at 94c?

sound like your thermal pad or thermal grease is gone ... try removing the old stuff and applying something like AC5.

94C is really too hot ... it probably got a lot hotter without any thermal pad or grease ... you may have already damaged it

Well concidering it still plays my games fine with not artifacting, except for the restarting part.. ive only done it on testing, as far as normal use i havnt touched anything to casue an overheat...

so i doubt it damaged anything.

why are my games freezing at 94c?
because 94 is really too hot ... try applying some fresh thermal grease
