Things you would do to improve the IM client of your preference?

MSN: Easily-accessible message history.

I just can't remember all the damn numbers for ICQ anymore.

MSN could have the chat-log.

AIM: I have no problems with.

Yahoo Messenger: not much problem either.

I liked oldschool PowWow (that was oldschool) where the keystrokes were live. You could see each letter the person typed, as they typed it. I really liked that. You would see what they say /before/ they thought twice, and you would type the same. It would make things a lot more direct. It was more personal, and you had to pay attention to the conversation.

ICQ incorporated it in their "chat room" thingy but that was rarely used.

Y! and AIM with a direct connect has a "your buddy is typing" thing. I think that should be more of a standard across IM platforms.

icq: remove the fcking bloat so i can actually have it run in the background

the almost got it right with the lite version but the idiots removed privacy options, WTF?!

Trillian: make transfer speeds better. Ill get 200k/s useing trilliand when AIM gets me 8 megs/sec. between teh same 2 comps
