I like my new car. I like knowing how every mile was put on and how the car ages.

The list title should be changed to "things you shouldn't buy new, because you are concerned with cost".

#1: My 2001 Ford Focus ZX3 (bought new) went through a lot of punishment and even went to see dirt roads and powerslides. Thing never went under any mechanical repair other than regular maintenance. ALL used cars I've seen my parents own in my lifetime has DIED on them. Twice on the road.

#2: Never had the experience of owning a new house

#3: Loved my new toys, they ended up breaking anyway.

#4: I loved our new piano, but I never owned a used instrument yet.

#5: My CD's are doing great.

Basically, anectdotal evidence won't prove a thing.

Not going to watch the video...

But I will say:

1) You shouldn't buy a domestic or low resale vehicle new. But when it comes to a Honda/Toyota/Subaru it just makes more sense to spend an extra couple thousand and buy new. Those vehicles drop so little in price there just isn't much incentive to buy a year or two old one over a new one.

2) Depending on the location you are in, when you buy a house still under construction, you get a major discount. I know that in Phoenix, you could buy new constructs at $XXX,XXX at the begining of the building phase and it would appreciated up to $25,000 by the time it was done. Used homes would price out much higher than what the early build price was.

Plus you get to pick out your own carpet and other upgrades that you might end up putting in out of your own pocket on a used home. Just really depends on the area.

The others I don't have much gripes about.

You could make an arguement about Computers. They drop like a rock in price.

I didn't watch the video so I don't really know their reasoning.

Any car that's worth owning doesn't depreciate that much in the first couple years unless it's completely beat down. If you're in the market for a Kia Sephia that's another thing. Can you avoid tax if you buy from a private seller? Or do you have to report it?

As for homes? Ill take a new home over an old one anyday. In CA, there's not even that much of a price difference.

Agree for buying the other stuff used. Ill add bikes and bike parts to the list as well 🙂
I got my 2001 Trek Fuel 80 for $450 (original retail 1100), then changed out the front fork with a Rock Shox HydraAir for $130 (original retail $400).

Boats.

I can vouch for #2. I bought my house new (unfortunately), and it's gone down almost 20k from the price I bought it (few years ago). The price fluctuates too much because the subdivision isn't fully established yet.

I've learned from this and will buy used from now on.
